I just downloaded the most recent update (14.1.1282) and it seems that the auto text for page number has stopped working. In the file I am currently working on I had an auto page number in my title block. I set this up a while ago and it has been working fine. After the update it does not appear anymore even though the "code" is still there: <PageNumber>

I did a little test to rule out operator error and attempt to isolate the problem. I went to Text>Insert Auto-Text then tried each of the default auto text options. All of them display correctly except for the page number. It will put in the code for the auto page number but when I close the edit box it disappears from view.

If I select the area I can find the box again (just shows a small blue bounding box around nothing visible). When I double click to edit it I can still see the "code" so it's still there somehow.

I double checked that the text style is black with 100% opacity and it's on a visible layer with no objects in front of it.

Can anyone else create this behavior?

I just did a test on the updated Layout (14.1.1282) and it works fine for me in a new file: insert new text -> <PageNumber> -> works. Maybe re-install ?

uh oh. It works for me in a new document as well but not for the set of construction drawings I am nearly finished with. Seems they are corrupted in some way or there is something I am missing. The file is huge, I will try to delete a bunch and see if I can keep the behavior and post the file.

So I stripped out most of the content so it is a smaller file. Here is the crazy thing. The auto page number works on the last 2 pages but not on the first two pages. Even more bizarre is that in the title block on the bottom there is "A<PageNumber>" set to display on every page but it will only function properly on the last two pages.

Can anyone take a look and see what they think?

On the original document I found that if I bring the bottom page up to the top of the list (first page) all will behave as expected.

The last page of this document was once the first page. I made it then later moved it down. I am pretty sure this is the page I first inserted the auto page number and put it as on every page. When it is the first page everything works, when I move it lower in the order every page that is earlier gets corrupted.

Seems that way at this point anyway. Does the sketchup team monitor this forum or should I submit a ticket with them?

              Hi Sketchy-

That's actually a feature, but it's a little hard to figure out what's going on when you don't know about it.

If you go into the "Customize Auto-Text" option in the Text menu, and then display the settings for the <PageNumber> tag, you'll see a setting for "Start Page". If the <PageNumber> tag is placed on a page that's BEFORE the "Start Page", it will have an empty value. If you look in the Pages inspector, you'll notice that there's a little blue hash-mark in front of any page that's being used as a "Start Page".

The purpose of this feature is to allow the use of a <PageNumber> tag in a document that perhaps has a cover sheet that shouldn't be numbered. The <PageNumber> tag can be placed on a shared layer, and it will simply not display on any pages before the Start Page.

I don't check this forum more than a few times a month, but I do monitor the official LayOut forum more closely:

              thanks,

I did notice the blue # and saw that my "problem" must be related to this after I posted. I poked around but couldn't find where to change this. I don't know if this is workable but if there was an option to change start page numbering in a context click menu on that hashtag I might have found it.

In any case thanks for helping me with this. I will be sure to check out the official forum next time I have an issue.
