IMPORTING 3DS FILE INTO SKETCHUP
-
Hello there.. i need help, my sketchup is really slow due to my big size design, i cant even navigate it or do anything it will freeze, i looked around and read alot of comments about a plugin called cleanup3, i downloaded it and cleaned it but still the same thing its slow, i also exported it as a 3DS file, went to the file i exported the model in and there i got all the textures and images that are in the model, i resized the images and saved in the same file then i imported that same file the 3DS one into sketchup hoping it will be all fine since i reduced the image sizes.. but that happens is, after importing when i click done it says memory full, it cant load the file. how can i fix this problem?

file size? poly count? can you navigate the model in wireframe mode? can you navigate the model with textures removed? have you imported lots of models into your scene?
you shouldn't have to export and import again.

The file size is 47.3Mb and i dont know about the poly counts, i dont know how to find that.. and yes i can navigate it but its still slow..i havent removed any textures only because it takes ages so long to only take one texture off and i have many, i have alot of windows imported and doors and people and furniture basically, the model is big... i actually exported and imported many times... did i mess up alot?
-
Well you need to systematically remove parts of your model to see what is causing the problem. Sometimes all it takes are a few imported high-poly models to completely freeze your whole model space. I also recommend running a purge or using the Purge plugin.

so u think i should remove some textures and see how it will work, thats fine, but that is a purge? im new to sketchup i dont really have any plugins

is the file too big to move around with?

You tell me
. I'm not saying it's textures, it could be models that you have imported that are causing the problem.
Once you delete some imported objects, purge your file. You can also just download a plugin that purges your whole file in a couple of clicks. Below is the manual way.
If your model is still slow after you've deleted your imported objects, see if the textures are to blame.

ok well i did as u said and i unchecked everything and checked them again one by one to see where the slowness is coming from... and finally i realised that the amount of doors i have and people is crazy they really made it extreme slow for me, but the design alone without the doors and people still slow.. so i imported the 3ds file into rhino, and its just crazy every line is meshed, so im gonna go back to sketch up and will follow these steps in the link u sent.. u still havent told me what the purge is?
-
Just read the purge link I shared. Purging removes unused components, materials etc from your model. why are you importing into rhino, I don't get it?
You must delete geometry, not just hide it. If you're hiding objects they are still in your model. If you delete components one by one and purge, you'll find whatever is slowing down your model.

i just did the steps, clicked on 'purge unused' but nothing happened? how do i know whats changed?
-
well im only importing it to rhino because i want to hatch some sections for my design and i dont know to to get a scaled print from sketchup :S
-
still slow? can you even post a few screenshots of your model? anything will help!

just upload it direct to the forum. click upload attachment when you are replying. you may need to resize the images if it fails.

I am close to giving up here!

these are the images... nooo dont give uppp

did u give up?

bed time, others will be along to help I'm sure and i'll help out tomorrow too.
are all your chairs and imported furniture components? Have you tried deleting parts of your model to see what's causing the problem? This is the only way to determine what's causing the stickiness. It is quite a large model, but no reason why it can't run smoothly with proper use of components and layering.
