Excellent work! I like how you are detailing this and not just glossing over those little things like the stopwater and the deadwood pieces. Are you glad you don't have to search the countryside for grown crooks?

Thanks guys, and Updates you will get!

Ribs Added and Platforms Removed, Keel is also complete, Temporary Main Deck Planks can be seen but these will be removed when framework is built.

I have an interesting issue that I cant seem to find a solution for, the Hull Planking is done in 1 group, to show in the rendering however each plank needs to be modeled and grouped seperatly, the method Ive attempted was to use the follow me tool starting from the top line with a circle and intersecting it with the hull face, this works for the first 4 planks but after a while the amount of intersections become to much and it becomes a mess.

Im sure a plugin for this must exist, this task can be achived manually but it will take hours if not days, and it will not be used in the final model at all as its just for rendering purposes.... Ideas?

Have you tried 1001 Tools? you're essentially trying to extrude a flat profile along a complex curve... I've used this plugin for complex walkways on bridges with curves a spiral... same thing basically. http://www.1001bit.com

Thanks Chaps, Ewie the Extrusion is already made, it was actually that tool (Create Loft Junctions) that allowed me to draw so many ribs since ship drawings only have a few usually showing.

Here is a small Update, I have not modeled the deck framing showing the Horizontal knees as this is quite a task and will again not be used in the final model, Knees seen below will be in the final, keel still needs some Pieces added on top of ribs to finish off.

Hull is fully Planked ( Each Plank can not be shown unfortunatly ) , Work on the Accomodations have begun, Decks are in place and a few other bits and pieces added.

Had the same problem with my Viking boat. Made a .png side view with planks drawn in and then projected onto the hull. Not too bad from a distance.

Bob, that's a nice Viking boat. Is it modeled after a specific historical example? Did you shape the hull with the hollows near the stern?

Does that answer your question? Not sure what you mean. Based on the Oseberg ship. Looks cool, but not for the ocean. A replica sank twice in moderate weather.

The way they were planked (planks before frames on boats like that) there was a sort of hollow that created a vortex. It's a little like the vortex that comes off the wingtips on airplanes. This apparently improved the way the boats tracked and also helped reduce drag and increase speed.

Didn't know about that. Found this...

"At the bow and the stern builders were able to create hollow sections, or compound bends, at the waterline making the entry point very fine." ????

Still the most impressive sketchup yet.
I also like the effect the blue shadows have.
I spent some time on the USCG Eagle. Steel hull, but still impressive.
Are you going to mess with masts, rigging, sails?

                                      This is great!

Its a shame the hull is so flat so you cant see the plank details. If your putting this into a game like the last ship then I understand why but it would make for a great model!
