Make active face the current layer
-
Is there a quicker way to set the current layer than selecting it through the layer dialogue box? Sure would be nice to have a context menu item like "make layer current" when right-clicking a face.

Why are you changing the active-layer from Layer0 ?
Drawing geometry on multiple layers leads to terrible confusion as deleting an edge from a visible layer can also remove an associated face on a hidden layer.
Remember that Layers in SketchUp do not work like CAD layers.
They do not separate geometry, they simply control the visibility of things.
So grouped/component geometry can take another layer that switches on/off because the group/component already separates its contents from other 'outside' geometry...You can assign a layer to selected objects [doing so for edges/faces is NOT recommended] by using Entity Info's Layer-drop-down, or with the Layers docked toolbar dropdown...
Didier's 'Layer-Manager' toolset also has tools to match/change layers, set active etc... IF you must pursue that route...

Amen to TIG! Follow this rule and you'll save yourself a lot of trouble!

Ah. I think I see the light. So it's best to draw everything on layer 0, then assign groups or components to an appropriate layer for visibility. Is that the idea?
-
Yup!
Also make a style with "Color By Layer" ticked.. then you have a very visible idea of what is going on in complicated assemblies.

Thanks for that tip. Makes a lot of sense.
