Problem importing 3d files in dwg format
-
I always find trouble importing pre-made models in dwg format. A good model with a perfect mesh would land in sketchup broken and unusable. Is there something Im not doing right. This is a recurring problem that I just brush aside and always end up redoing or repairing the model.
Still most furniture company publish their 3d blocks in dwg format. Hope there's a fix to this.

Just a quick thought, as it seems to be all the small faces that are breaking, have you tried adjusting the import scale so the faces are big enough for SU, then scale it down to size.

No luck.. Tried scaling it 1000x but still came in broken...

I may have used the word scale in the wrong sense, rather than scaling the object I was really talking about the import options units. In the import dialog you have an options setting where you can change from feet to metres etc, perhaps a larger unit there will help.
Do you have a download link for that specific chair to test?

Try importing the CAD file as if it were modeled in 'mm' - irrespective of its actual units/size.
This will give the most successful result because the very tiny facets can't be created [<1/1000th"].
Two almost coincident points are deemed coincident by SketchUp as its tolerances can't see otherwise, so the edge isn't added and then any face belonging to it doesn't form either.
Then edit the resultant component and use the Tapemeasure tool to pick 2 points a know distance part. type in the actual dimension and accept Yes...Alternatively scale the CDA file's contents using a CAD app and re-import it into the SKP...
Don't overdo the sizing as very very enormous dimensions cause similar issues to very tiny ones... -
Solved!!! I just tried inserting with the "inch" unit rather than the "mm". I was thinking that If I change the unit in CAD to mm and scale the object accordingly. It will be imported with the same mm unit. This model is probably modeled in the inch unit (Im guessing). I tried bringing back the unit to inch in autocad and inserted with the inch unit in the import option (though Im in mm unit in SKP) The size matched very well and the model is no longer broken. Thanks everyone for your input.
