This does not appear to be a sketchup file
-
Hi, I have a .skp file, created in SU 8.0 free about 2 years ago (before I bought Pro), SU won't open it giving me 'This does not appear to be a sketchup file'. Unfortunately I don't have the backup file now. The file is 11.8Mb (and doesn't zip down much), but I've put a copy on Dropbox https://www.dropbox.com/s/0m5n7nkykk0frny/008.ec.skp just in case.
Is there any other way of opening skp files though?

Didn't open in SU for me either.
Tried importing it to 3dsMax without luck.
Aand a 3d model converter software I have failed on import.I guess the file is corrupt.

Thanks for trying Pixero, fortunately it's an old file and the job is finished. I was just hoping to get some objects out of it. It would be nice to know how it was corrupted so I can avoid it happening again.

As files get older they get curious and start hangin out with the wrong sort of files, image files, web files......one thing leads to another, next it's videos.......... it's a downward spiral into that pitiful state where they forget who and what they are.

Think that's covered by ObamaCare?

If you look into the header of the file using Notepad++ it starts with "PK..." NOT "SketchUp Model..."
This immediately suggests that it's a .ZIP file NOT a .SKP...
Changing its extension to .ZIP lets you open an archive file that when you look inside thinks its a "Layout" file !
So changing its ending to .layout lets you open it in "Layout".
It is intact and has several embedded files and four missing ones...
At least that might give you some clues to their names/whereabouts ?

Thanks very much TIG
When I followed the ref from the layout file, everything was there, somehow surviving one normal reinstall, plus a switch to 64bit (and major reinstall), and several mass cleanouts of the system!
