Ya-hoo! I got it to work!
This will help the appearance of the cabinets I have been drawing.
However, this could be problematic with cabinets with multiple components, which leads to my next question... how can I modify the material file so there is one "standard" and one that is rotated 90 degrees? This would be a time saver to me, instead of having to click on each component that has incorrect grain, and then rotating them the way Alpro and James described.

I think your best bet is to export the texture image, then use PS or something similar to rotate, then import back into SU, and then drag the imported material to whatever folder you what to save it to (ie wood). The easiest method I have worked out, when having to texture a multitude of wood grains running in every conceivable direction, is to import the image file, scale it to the correct size, then copy/rotate it into what I call a material star (see pic).
You might actually need a copy of this rotated 90 degrees to cover every possible direction (other than diagonal)When you've set these up, you just select them all and explode them. You can then sample the appropriate surface (Alt + Paint tool) and paint it straight onto the cabinet. After a while, you don't need the star any more because you can just sample the surfaces you've already painted.

very cool trick Alan, but doing it this way does not allow to be able to save your rotated texture as a .skm for future use or do you have another trick?

You can still save it as a skm, Mike. As soon as you explode it, it appears on the In Model tab and you can save it from there. If you wanted a rotated version saved, then you could just rotate it using SU's positioning tools on one particular surface.
I find that rotating the images like this...before actually painting them onto a surface...is far quicker than using the repositioning tools once you have applied them.

Not sure if this is the correct thread. Please move it if it needs moving.
I have created new (wood) materials and saved then to my (wood) Materials folder in SU8.
But when I go to find them in Windows explorer, I can't find them there.I would like to copy them from the Materials (wood) folder to my backup hard drive.
Any suggestions?Please see images attached.

Richard, notice there's a button labeled 'Compatibility Files' in your second screen shot. This indicates you haven't got full permissions to the Materials folder. Change them for all users to Full.

Ye. Had a virus issue after plugging my H/D into someone else's Laptop. Spent days sorting out permissions.
