Video Card Question
-
OK Joe the best you can do with an AGP based system is an nVidia GF7800GS. You might have to buy used as they are no longer made.
http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/sys/4161690000.html
Just make sure you system can use the card. It needs a full size case, a 400w power supply and a spare power connector (the white ones with a 4 pin connection).
Pretty soon you will need to get a new PC
Good luck. -
A list of some AGP cards.
(Higher is better)
-
Ya soon need a new pc but first I need to get a laptop.
How do I tell if I have a full sized case?
Same with the 400 amp power? I looked in C Panel > System but don't see any power Info.Glenn, how did you find that C List add? I went to the computer section, did a search for nVidia GF7800GS and nothing came up.

I think the latest and fastest available AGP card is the Radeon HD 4670 from 2008
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_HD_4000_SeriesIt should be much faster than a 7800GS. Here is the comparison to the 7800GT (no GS in the Chart)

But there are some listed on ebay.

Open up the case and look on the power supply and see what it says. As for the case unless it is real small it should be big enough. All I did was go to SD cl and search agp in the computer section and found it. You should see if you have a spare power connection as well.

Ati and it's openGL driver issues are well documented on this site. I have an ati hd on my laptop and it can't touch my gf gt in my desktop in SU. It plays games well but not SU.
Just my results. -
well, I ordered this one
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290961978234&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:US:3160can't wait to get it installed, as my SUp is pretty slow and cranky,
now I need to google 'how to replace video card'
really appreciate the advice people, now I need to find a laptop that fits my needs ..
-
After trying many video cards, I have to say the nvidia gtx series are by far the most problem free for SU. I currently run an evga gtx 4gb, and it is very quick. Spend the money, as it is probably the single most important component in a computer build dedicated for 3d design software. If you can afford it, get the Titan cards. I'll be doing that Next.

uninstall the ATI driver (see above), replace card (do ground yourself before touching), install the latest AMD Catalyst driver (see above), done.

+1, it really is that easy. Good luck Joe. I have one similar to that in my laptop and I am unimpressed but other factors may be involved.
-
...just to be clear, i didn't mean you should get a HD4350 which is one of the weakest cards from this series - much slower than a 4670!
http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/gaming-graphics-cards-charts-2009-q3-mainstream-quality-update-2/compare,1572.html?prod%5B2905%5D=on&prod%5B2900%5D=on&prod%5B2911%5D=on
I only wanted to show you that there are still cards available from this series. -
OK I can return it, so I should order this one? the GeForce GTX 650?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130827&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords--pla--Desktop+Graphics+Cards-_-N82E16814130827&gclid=CNWouufty7oCFQE6Qgod528AfgI don't do much intensive modeling, and never do any rendering.
will I still need that extra power connector with this card? The white ones with a 4 pin connection.

There should be a sticker on it, I do not know of anywhere one can check in windows however.
-
yeah I can see a sticker up under the case but I can't read it unless I take it out.
-
no numer, I only want the card, sorry, I don't know anything about replacing video cards or what to buy. I'm feeling pretty ignorant now.
Solo, I've been googling what psu a dell dimension 4600 has, some are 250 watt and some 400 .. I downloaded the 4600 owners and service manuals, is it in there? Sorry I don't see it listed.
-
The GTX650 not available as AGP card. The latest AGP cards are some Radeon HD4xxx and GeForce 7xxx. Or do you plan to buy a new board now?

IF it is a Dell computer, (I think you mentioned it is).....find the "service tag #" on the exterior of the case.
It would be on a small decal about the size of a return address on a USPS envelope. Then, simply go to the Dell site.....support....service tag#....enter sevice tag #....viola...all or most specs. should still be available specific to your build.
