Do we have a plugin to make all objects in a particular component to be in one layer?

I have downloaded a model from 3d warehouse where it has a layer for every single object inside it. What I dont like to do is to get to the lowest sub-level of each object and change the layer ... Or if Im not concern about keeping the grouping, Id just explode it._ But I dont like to do this .

In trying to keep the number of layers to a minimum, (like when you import a CAD file for example with 30 + layers)I hope somebody has made such a plugin for this which I may not be aware of.

Delete the layers from the Layers Panel and move the geometry to Layer 0. Then layer as needed

I think functions like this can be a good addition to jiminy-billy-bob's Layer panel..
example: merge layers, erase layers, group layers..just like photoshop as he intends,

I think "default layer geometry" does all that needs to be done. Then all geometry is on Layer0 where it belongs, and you can assign components, including nested groups or components to whatever layer is required.
