HUGE problem with section slice groups !!!
-
finalising my project after 100ds of hours of work,
I wanted to include some section cuts
sections worked fine, create group from slice also
moving this group to where I could work on it: fine again
when I wanted to slightly adapt the sliced group (add some lines to form new surfaces, paint some surfaces a different color, etc...)
I noticed there are groups within the sliced group which made it impossible to do what I wanted
so I proceeded to explode the groups within the sliced group one after the other
got what I wanted (at least I thought so), so I saved my project this morning under it's original name, erasing the previous version
upon reopening it, I notice that all original groups and components are exploded, not only within, as I wanted, but also outside the sliced group
so now everything sticks together, and I have no backup
this is dramatic: it will take me hours to repair
please help

If you save the file using the old name like <name.skp> at the same time Sketchup makes a backup file <name.skb> file. That skb file should contain the previous saved skp-file.
So rename the <name.skb> to something like <old.skp> and open that file. If you're lucky, all you components will be like before.
I hope it works out for you!
edit: search in the forum for the archiver ruby plugin. I use it all the time and it really is a life saver in situations like this.

thanks, Kaas,
but if you save your project under the same name, I imagine the .skb file is also updated
this is what I did, as I had no reason to suspect that anything was wrong:
who would think that exploding an image of a group or component in a section slice will also explode the original group and component ?thanks for the tip concerning the archive plugin
I already had it installed,
but it has improved a lot, so I upgraded
a timer would be ideal for automatic archivingI probably wouldn't have used it, as I was confident nothing wass amiss
to my opinion this is a huge bug in Sketchup

Did you actually check the skb? If you have saved the 'wrong file' multiple times the skb won't be of any help indeed.

I just tested this by making a group and a component and creating a group from slice. In the group with the section SketchUp creates are unique components, one for every group and component you're slicing (I checked with the outliner). I can't see any bug there so I'm not sure what happened in your file.

I wish I could help you, but if you don't have a previously saved version, you may be out of luck and need to regroup the things you exploded.
This is actually another good reason to keep a master SU model on a given project and reference it into separate files for things like sections, RCP, Interiors...etc.

I did something similar, how about using the windows back-up files, save what you have to a thumb drive or disc, then return the documents to a previous saved backup
