Is there a way to change the edge style (I'd like grey lines, not black) in a component or group without changing the edge style of the entire model?

I drew a brick wall, using 2 bricks as components, and building them up to form a wall. Now there is ONE row I'd like to grey out, but not having much luck.

Here's what I've tried so far:

      1. Recreated brick as a separate file, changing edge style under "Styles". Looked great. Saved it, copied it over to my wall. All edges turned black. Obviously the Styles setting in my Wall drawing, overrides the style setting of the lone brick in the "Grey Brick" file.
      2. In Wall file, I created a unique component of one brick. Decided to "Soften Edges". But when I dragged clicker to 90 degrees, the edge lines disappeared altogether.
      3. Any attempt to change the edge style in the Styles setting, is doing a global change instead of on just one brick.

Thought this would take 5 minutes.
      I've hit a brick wall!
      Help.

The edge style settings are not very flexible in SketchUp - and (as you noticed) you cannot set them per entity basis only globally. All you could do is to go back to the edge styles settings, set edge colour by material and paint the edges of this certain row of (obviously unique) components to grey. Then be careful not to colour any other edges (so that they'll pick up the +default" black) or even any group/component from "outside".

As Gai said, styles are applied globally, not to specific geometry. Applying a gray material to the edges of the bricks in that one row and using Color by Material under the Edges tab would be one option. Keep in mind you'll need to make the brick components in that row unique to break their relationship with the rest and you'll need to open the component for editing to apply the material to the edges.

The easiest way to apply the material to the edges is to triple click on the geometry with the Select tool and then apply the material to the selection.

Gai and Dave - it was painstaking trying to change the edges (instead of the brick face) but I did it.
            It works. Thank you!

Nadine, I'm glad you got it but it shouldn't be a "painstaking" thing to do. Did you try what I said? Get the Select tool. Triple click on the geometry of the brick, This will select all edges and faces. Once you've done that, apply your gray material/color to the selected entities. Clicking once with the paint bucket on the selection will paint the faces and the edges. If you wish the faces to be a different color, you can easily repaint them either back to the default or to some other color. Just don't have anything selected when you repaint.

There are plugins that could help with this but you can do it with the native tools and you should learn how to do it that way first.

One other little tip to get just the edges, view/face style/wireframe, this way you can select all the edges and paint them in one go and not have to worry about the faces.
