There are lots of ways to miter the ends of your 1x8s. Pilou has shown one although his would leave you with an open corner. πŸ˜‰ Here's another way.

        miter1.png
Select the edge of the board. This would be the edge at the corner that would drop on your foot when you saw the real board. Get the Move tool and...

        miter 2.png
...move the edge back along the face. a 1x8 should be 3/4 in. thick so move the edge 3/4 in. and you'll have a 45Β° miter. The move distance is the thickness of the board. No fuss, no muss.

This method wouldn't work for a profiled molding but for the skirting around your deck, it'll be perfect. Do it on one skirt board component and copy that component around the deck to make the rest. Use Make Unique as needed so you can edit the length by selecting a mitered face and moving it to the desired length.

Sometimes it is best to think about how you would do things in real life. To this end I made a mitre box. Although it's really only a bit of a joke, it is fully functional.
Simply pop your wood in, adjust the saw to the correct angle, and use Intersect faces to create the cut you want. It won't fall off on your foot, you'll have to delete the bits you don't want, but it does create the "saw cut".

The main thing is, it gives you a visual, and almost tactile, reference to the physical world which can help to bring your own physical skills into the virtual world.

Think of it as an analogue plugin.

(Maybe its the same solutions than Jean, I can't reload his version πŸ˜‰
With the V8 Pro you have also the solution of some boolean Diff operations!
                your volumes must be "solids"

So just put a "big box" at 45Β° of your volume and make your cut! πŸ˜„
