      Hi everyone,

I think I'm missing out on something with the use of HDR/HDRI files. I haven't ventured into this area yet and I think I should. I think the HDRI files are for backgrounds? Am I right?! And the HDR is a form of emitter??!

Can anyone point me in the right direction of a decent tutorial on these?? I'm particularly interested in setting decent skies (for views within an interior) and trying to simulate flames (for candles/fireplaces).

      Cheers
      Anita

      P.S. Jason, hope you're well!! πŸ˜‰

Imagine a panorama of an interior or exterior wraped perfectly around a sphere

Now when you look around this sphere it is as if you are inside the area itself

Now imagine that every pixel of that image holds a light value

So now if you use this image as a light it is known as Image Based Lighting (IBL)

Reflections are also of this area you sit within so your inserted models are both lit and reflect the surrounding sphere.

It is best if you start with some simple primitives and then apply a HDR as your light to see results.

Simulating flames is an entirely different discussion....
