Selection Problem
-
Hello!
I want to edit something (apply the follow me tool on a part of a rectangular frame) within a component, but it seems that the component doesn't behave normally.
When I double click the component, the component bounding box appears, after that I start to try to select a single edge, but no matter which single edge within the component I try to select, all the edges get selected at once (highlighted in blue) and I never manage to select a single edge.
Does somebody know where the problem is?
one click: all edges get highlighted in blue
double click: only bounding box appears (if I start to click then any single edge, all edges get highlighted in blue)
triple click: bounding box and all edges get highlighted in blue
Sorry for my bad English.

Could you post an example SKP file? It sounds like you have a situation where there is a nested component.

Check out the outliner window click on the parts and see the interaction with the model and the outliner. expand the components and watch the model.

Thank you very much guys!
Yes it was nested. I am quite new to SU and I was a bit overly enthusiastic with selecting elements and creating groups and components without the knowledge that there is the possibility to produce a component in a component.
I've watched some "nesting videos" and I now I am aware of what this is and what it does.
Very cool forum!

Alex, it takes some practice but get used to drawing one thing and making that a component before you move on to draw something else. I like to use a triple click of the Select tool when selecting geometry for making a component. This will get everything that is attached and make it clear that I've got what I need. By working on one part at a time and making it a component before moving on, I'm unlikely to get geometry I don't want in the selection. And I don't make nested components until I've made the individual components.

THX for the advice, I'll try to do that.

Hi folks.
Be carefull with the triple click.
If an object is enclosed inside another but doesn't touch it, a double click on the outer object will not select the inner one.
The safest way is to use X-Ray mode to ascertain that all that you want to select has really be selected. In such cases, using a selection window is safer.
Another trick I learned is that in some situations, with a really crowded model, it is nearly impossible, even with careful pan, zoom and orbit, to select exactly what you want. Some unwanted geometry always gets selected when you don't want it. The trick is not to loose time trying to beat the system. Select as well as you can and then deselect the few items that may have been accidently selected. Many times, it turned up to be the fastest way.
Just ideas.
