Solid Tool Subtract Question ?

Why did it work on one end and not the other ?

Also open to better ways of doing this.

I expect the first Subtract converted the group to a non-solid because of a tiny face (really a hole) being created. Hard to tell without seeing it.

Since I prefer components to groups, I don't use the Solid Tools unless it's a very complex subtraction or other modification. The Solid Tools convert components to groups which I don't care for. So my method for mitering this thing would be to draw a simple cutting plane at the miter angle and in the desired location. Then I would use Intersect Faces and delete the waste.

I had looked at the other end after subtracting and it appeared closed, but guess it really wasn't.
I tried it on an identical sized piece, but without the chamfer cuts and it worked.

I use the following plugin, Hole on Solid tool v1.6.3, to trim, miter or drill holes. It will work on groups and components. It is not perfect, but sometimes it is a lot easier to make a miter cut or a trimming cut though multiple stacked groups/components using this tool.

Just draw a face representing what you wish to remove, select the face and then select one at time the groups/component you wish to modify.
