Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to Sketchup and I got it because I really like the styles function. I'm not really interested in using it to model.

I imported a low-res model from a game just to test things out, and when I first imported it the triangulation wasn't rendering. After clicking a few things blindly I can't get the triangulation to go away. Highlighted in red in this image is what I mean:

Does it have to do with the edge smoothing when the file is imported perhaps? I can't seem to fix this issue though.

Any tips are much appreciated. This program is awesome!

        Hi:
If you can submit the .skp file, folks could analyze it and provide answers.

But, the first thing that comes to mind is that these diagonals define where two non coplanar faces meet- meaning the other corners are not on the same plane.
The next thing that comes to mind is that you have portions of the model either in Groups or in Components. These edges cannot go away without the group disappearing- unless you edit the group itself. Right click>Edit Group or Edit Component, whichever it is.
Other possibilities are group is locked or component is locked.
One other thing you may want to look at is View>Hidden Geometry.

I take the slow, deliberate approach in my aimless wandering.

It may also be the case that when importing, you did not check the import options. Most modelling applications triangulate faces and when importing to SU, under the options, there is one saying "merge coplanar faces" - which will delete this useless triangulation.

There are also plugins that can do this afterwards but in case it's a simple import issue, I would start troubleshooting with that (import it again)

You can try to manually delete those edges, too. I'd suggest working on the model with simple vector edges turned on and only use the sketchy styles for exporting.

He said when he first imported it, the triangulation wasn't rendering though. So it also sounds like it could just be that you have turned on hidden geometry. I think the shortcut key for that is "v" or go to the menu View > Hidden Geometry.

You could have also accidentally unhidden and unsmoothed everything. There is a simple smoothing tool. Go to Window > Smooth Edges and select the whole object, then move the slider in that tool. You probably take it to anything above 20 degrees up to just under 90 degrees. That will hide lines in bulk.

Or if you want to do it on a fine-tuned line by line basis, use the eraser tool and hold down the ctrl key while erasing a line. That will not erase it, but it will smooth and hide it.

There are a few more ways to do it, and a few "gotcha's" to look out for.

Lately you've been tan, suspicious for the winter.

Hidden geometry won't show as sketchy edges, though.

+1 For Dave - I knew I should have checked that!

Wow, thank you guys! I'm not used to such quick and helpful responses! I really appreciate it 😄

As Gaieus suggested, I checked the import options, and ticking on Merge coplanar faces solved the problem. Also, when I exported the model from Maya, then to Max so I could save as .3ds, I didn't export the smoothing groups. When I went back and exported it correctly, this also solved the problem.

Thank you for your advice everyone, really appreciate it 😄 I can't wait to go crazy with this program, and this community is awesome. Have a great day guys!
