Reminds me of that documentary where James May built a life size airfix model of the spitfire, thing it's in a museum somewhere in the UK now, but this should be a great project to follow, keep us updated Liam

        Cheers!

Well all wrapped up and ready for the journey home from my parents. I have two hours on the train so expect to start getting some of the parts fleshed out in 3D.

Nosecone, firewall and exhausts first and will have them printed this month. Wings to follow in Feb...

No you are right I dont know why I said Spitfire I think I had a lot to drink at Christmas when I posted this and I havent noticed until you just brought it up!... it is indeed a Hurricane.

It will in fact be a Hurricane Mk V when its complete with a 4 blade prop however I think I am going to 'de-badge' it and turn it into a generic aircraft. Some fo the 3D printed parts will be function over form and loose the original look. For example I am having the exhausts under the fuselage rather than wither side.

              Good spot anyway Khai!

After multiple trains (4) the plane survived the trip to London!

Started to model the parts in SU ready for printing/laser cutting.

If you didn't live so far away I would oblige but you can probably afford to buy one for what it would cost to ship! I will be offering to print sketchucation members models however as long as they cover the cost of the material (should be very low) and then shipping costs if they then want the model.

Wow, that's very generous of you! You sure you won't get overwhelmed by requests? You might find it hard to find time for your own 3D models. And I'm guessing that packing up an intricate 3D model for shipping can be tricky and time-consuming. You really ought to consider charging something for your time and the wear and tear on your nice new printer.

Just out of curiosity, what model printer did you order?

I will only do as many as I can manage/feel comfortable with. Its a way for me to practice printing while covering my material costs and it will be for a limited time only, probably for the first month. I have lots of polystyrene packing stuff so its no problem to post a model and they are very light I have printed a lot in the last year so I dont need to practice with models just the new hardware. By the way this is only small scale models nothing major, anything big I will be charging for once the rig is tried and tested!! πŸ˜„ . Plus I have been knocking about here for a few years so can sort the members from the chances! πŸ˜‰

I got this one from kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1682938109/robo-3d-printer ) the bids not finished yet but I gave $700, enough to secure a fully assembled printer and also the capability to print in ABS, wood, wax and other materials as well as shipping to the UK.

I have never got anything from kickstarter but they only needed $50k and its already on $150k with a month to go. Projected to hit $250k before the 23 days are up.

Actually that's the reason I've decided to hold off on getting one, I want to let it "cook" for a while (and like any new play-purty the prices will undoubtedly come down as it gets perfected.

Well I felt the same and this wasnt the printer I wanted but for $700 (including an attachment to print in wood, wax, ABS plastic and more for an extra $99, international shipping and insurance) it was a steal.

I will play with this for a year or so and make enough money to pay for it and then eventually buy another one in a year or so.

Shame I have to wait for so long but I have my laser scanner to play with until then. I just got a new camera form Amazon and projector (borrowed from a colleague) to make the David Laser Scanner even more awesome!

Going to scan in my head, print it in wax and make a 'head candle' πŸ˜„ . Perhaps we can turn your chevy into a candle also! The most complicated candle ever made!

First things first have to scan in this RC aircraft and have all the parts ready for printing. Starting with something smaller to get me going πŸ˜‰
