Separating shadows from model
-
Somewhere on here somebody mentioned that he had separated the shadows from his model so that he could post process them separately. Well, having never post processed anything yet, I have no idea what is involved. Please fill my head with knowledge (right now it's full of something else)
Yeah, I are dumb

When I export images to use in photoshop, I often export a color image, a linework image and a shading/shadow image. Is that what you mean?

Ummmm.....huh? Keep in mind that post processing is new to me, and everything you just said went pretty much over my head. All I've done in SU to this point is model. Just your basic stuff

I think Steve was asking if it was possible to just save the shadows, not sure there is a plugin for that.

Well, I've searched and searched for the thread where this was mentioned, but no luck. Let's just chalk it up to me trying to step beyond my boundaries.
Thanks much

To me it sounds like you're trying to do some post processing where you export images of the model and then spruce them up in photoshop or something. For me, that means I would export a color image, a linework image and a shadows/shading image. Those would look like the attached images.
this way you can control their settings in photoshop better. Any thoughts as to what you're trying to achieve? Just wanting to play around with it a bit?

@solo:
Didn't someone do a thing where they mapped the shadow projection for a specific scene?
Is this what you guys are talking about here? Who was it? Pixero? -
I do this quite frequently and did a little tutorial a while back showing how I do it. It's basically what Chris showed with a faces export, a hidden line export and a shadows only export. sometimes I make two different shadows only exports with the time/date sliders set differently for each. This makes it easy to simulate multiple light sources.
The shadows as well as the other exports can be manipulated independently in your favorite image editor before being assembled. Often I export the lines at some larger size and resize in the editor to the size of the other exports so I can get very thin lines.
Here's an example.

I use this great plugin: http://rld.crai.archi.fr/rld/plugin_details.php?id=112
Outputs several different "passes" to be combined in Photohop or what ever you use.
