Dimension and lineweight/linetype issues
-
Hey everyone,
I've been working on some shop drawings in Layout3. I have my imported model with a couple different viewports set up on three or so pages. I've gotten all of my views annotated and with their corresponding details, but when I went back later to add a couple more dimensions in my model on SU, the "new" dimensions (dim text) does not appear, but the extension lines and everything else shows up fine (just no text). It is odd because the "new" dimensions are on the same layer as other dimensions that DO show up in my viewports in LO. I can fix this issue by rendering as Raster(fixes dimension problem), but not in Vector or Hybrid. I would prefer to render/print in Vector mode. Note: all models/scenes are updated and synced up with LO.Sorry to piggyback questions here but also, when I try to use a linetype other than a solid fill, such as a hidden linetype or centerline, I keep getting just a massive black blob in my prints. It appears properly when I am in LO paper-space, but when I go to Print Preview or Print, it gives me the blob effect. However, solid fill lines retain their given lineweight just fine. I am trying to use the linetype samples from the default Scrapbook linetypes.
I tried uploading some examples but it was taking quite a long time, let me know if you need the drawings to look at.
Thanks,

It would be nice to be able to see the LO file. I think without it any suggestions would be just shots in the dark.
Are you doing the dimensions in SketchUp?

Hi Dave,
Yes I am doing the dimensions in sketchup because I cant quite get the dims to look right using the tools in LO.Here is my LO file.
Thanks,

Ashe,
It appears that those missing dimensions are basically in the walls. Well, not really but they are so close that when you zoom in on them in SketchUp, they disappear. I added a dimension out away from the wall and it shows up fine. If you orbit the view in LO so you're looking down on the walls more, you can see those dimensions, too.
I think it's a case of the wall and the dimension being effectively in the same plane and the wall winning in the display contest. I can see two options for you. One is to place your dimensions away from the walls. Either place them up above the walls or create some temporary guidelines out in front of the walls to dimension to. The other would be to insert the dimensions in LayOut. I understand why your dimensions don't look right if you put them in with LayOut. Your model is displayed in Perspective mode and dimensions in LO don't do perspective. There is a work around while we wait for LyOut 4 which might do nice dimensions in perspective view.
I did a little thing on the work around. I'll scrounge it up.

Dave,
Thanks for the quick responses! I did notice the dims were kind of dancing in and out of the walls when orbiting. I wonder if the camera setting (parallel/perspective) WHILE placing these dimensions is the driving factor behind their visibility? I typically model in parallel, then switch to perspective for prints. I'm pretty sure I created the first set of dims in parallel and the second "invisible" set in perspective while I was going back in my work to tweak it. I'll have to tinker into that one.I'll make sure to keep an eye on camera settings and try to hold dims off surfaces a bit until we can get our paws on some new software.
Thanks for your time, Dave.

I almost never use dimensions in SketchUp anymore because I feel I have much better control over them in LO and they never disappear into the walls. Here's the link to where I talked about my work around for creating dimensions in perspective in LO. http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=36670&hilit=dimensions+perspective#p323984 It's not as fast as dimensions in 2D views but it works fine.
Actually I frequently use either guidelines or temporarily drawn lines in SketchUp to guide me for drawing lines in LO. When I've finished tracing them in LO I just delete them from the SU model and rerender. It's slick for creating dashed lines showing how parts in exploded views go together.

I do that also Dave. I keep them on a separate layer that is always off in all scenes. I toggle them on only when I need them in Layout. I also only dimension and note in LO only. I only model in SU.
