Have you tried it? All I need is a laser scanner if I use that option and if not I am going to see if I can borrow a projector from work. What method did you use?

Yeah I think I can acquire the hardware but I only found out the price for the dongle software a few days ago, nearly Β£400...yikes!

How did you find it, I will get the trial but if I cant export full polys I cant justify spending any money. I have signed up to the forums on David 3D so am hunting around to make sure its a worthwhile deal. Anybody else on this forum using it do you know?

It takes an immense amount of patient. It's like learning to spray paint. If the model is straight forward you can get good results. But forget it if you think doing this by hand is going to get any real quality.

A laser needs a steady hand or even better a mount. The model is best place on a turntable of sorts so to keep the scanning accurately distanced. Then the results need to be merged and cleaned.

It's extremely time-consuming plus boring as f$&k! I know the German member jo-ke using one and TIG is supposed to be amazing at it.

              What are you scanning?

I am going half with a mate and we are going to build a full automated rig to hold the laser and also a turntable. With these two elements in place it should make things easier. We are also turning my spare room into a scanning room.

Yeah I have heard its a big learning curve but it seems something that may be worthwhile. I now have access to a 3D printer so its good if I can start scanning in to print.

Yes, but what are you scanning? It's important that you are aware of the pitfalls. Shiny surfaces need to be talced or even sprayed with a matte paint.

                      Have you considered Photogrammettry?

I thought that was more expensive than David 3D?

If you have a camera already then all you need is TGI3D. You also don't need to sit in a dark room and the results can be super accurate. I use it quite alot.

                            [EDIT]
