Solid tools are available only in SU 8 Pro.
See this SU file for two ideas (use scenes tabs) if you have only SU 8 free.

With the V8 Pro if your model is 'Waterproof' (solid) you can make a boolean difference between a bounding "box" and your first model
Damned Jeff was more speedy by 30 seconds!

Yes your second method is valuable for this sort of simple "straight object"
But maybe not with more organic object
With this a normal Boolean Difference should be used or your first manual method
