Problems with two files open
-
Hey guys,
Mac, SU8, VRay 1.48.01
Does anyone else have any issues with materials when you have more than 1 file open in SU?... If I open up a file with some furniture to copy into my model for example, as soon as I open the second file the textures in my model are reduced to the basic sketchup diffuse maps... not bump, reflection etc. Don't know what to do!
Cheers,

Yep. This is something we need to live with for now. It's a bug that's been around for a while. Materials will not copy and paste over.

One solution is to turn off vray for SU in your preferences --> extensions. As long as vfsu is not running, you can copy and paste just fine. Then turn it back on and restart SU when you're done.

Hey guys...
found a decent fix for this...
If you duplicate the Sketchup Application in the applications folder (Mac)... it automatically calls the folder Sketchup 9... you can then open up two separate SU8 applications at once (similar to windows, prob why they dont have this issue). If you use one for your Vray file, you can use the other to copy and paste anything across without losing Vray material info.
Hope it helps for now... can't wait for all the bugs to be fixed properly!

This bug happens on Mac only, and is caused by a change in the way SU works on Mac vs Windows. On Mac, there is one instance of the app, meaning only one instance of our plugin is loaded. On windows, every SU windows is it's own instance, and a new instance of our plugin. The workaround proposed makes sense, because then the OS would treat the different copies of the SU app as different products, so they would each have their own instance of our plugin running.

in Windows, it should be a little different. On Mac, you don't have to copy and paste from one instance of SU to another to cause a problem, all you have to do is just create and/or use materials in each instance independently. If you'll notice, the original poster said all they have to do is open another scene in another instance to cause a problem. This is not the case in Windows, you would need to make the two instances interact somehow before there would be a problem... or at least that's where I last left off with this issue... If it has mutated in to something more awful... please let us know...

Well, weird things happen with second instances of vfsu in windows too. I don't recall specifics anymore because I just don't have multiple windows of SU open ever (One of the numerous workarounds I've adopted...)

... I don't understand how that could be the case, but then again... when has that ever stopped a bug from happening? I'll circle back to this when we are in SketchUp land again.

Only way around IMO: Copy - paste Normaly, then on the Materials menu, right click on the materials you need fixed and select Import Material. This will replace the model materials with the ones in your Library. Thanks
