Face camera ANY DIRECTION
-
I know nothing about ruby script. However, I hope to change that soon. I was wondering if there is a way to write a plugin that can make a component face the camera no matter its orientation. For example, I can make "Susan" face me as long as I rotate my view left and right (x,y axis). The moment I rotate the view above her, she no longer is facing me. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to approach this?

YES!

How was this accomplished?

One component is nested into another one. One has its blue axis (rotating axis) horizontally while the parent component has it vertically. No need to write a plugin for this.

I went this direction earlier this morning. Obviously, I was doing it wrong. Thank you, for your help.

This was the workflow:
- Made a component just as usually, to face the camera.
- Rotated it so that its blue axis was now horizontal
- Drew a line at one of its edge temporarily, selected both and made a component again to face the camera - but I left its blue axis go up now.
(Deleted the extra line later).

Very smart!

Does this workflow still achieve the desired result? I'm trying to create a flat plane that will always have its flat edge face the camera, so that it is basically invisible, yet still casts a shadow. I tried to achieve my shadow casting using this (http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=45769) workflow, but was unsuccessful rendering it in Vray, so I'm back here.
When I nest the face-me components, only the face-me properties of the parent component are active, unless I open that component for editing, then the nested one starts facing-me. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks folks!

Something like this?
Very nice solution!
Now place some eyes on that face and watch them follow your every move! puts on tin foil hat

I wonder what will happen with the use of a third dimension...
Nice little DUH?!
