Find 'ToolsOnSurface' by Fredo in the Plugins Index...
This toolset lets you do many of the native operations over a 3d surface...

Hi, you can use the stamp tool to draw the shape on a flat surface and project it onto the curved or any other shaped surface. You will need to activate your "sandbox if you have not done so. Tools/Sandbox/drape.

          Cheers

If you are looking for a 'drape' solution... there is also my 'SuperDrape' tool that is like drape, but can be more consistent AND transfers materials from one group to another...

For the sledge hammer approach, I use the push pull tool also, then intersect with model tool.
I have to do a bit of cleaning up afterwards, but it usually gives a fairly good result. Latest use attached.
( I have Fredo's tools though and should probably learn to use them.)
