Specs to run sketchup smoothly?
-
Hi,
I would like some help with you guys,May i know what specs should run sketchup smoothly? That is without much lags, and minimizing the huge time to save, open and close a sketchup file?I actually work with large masterplans and sometimes with large scale landscaping areas. The file range varies most of the time around 80 to a hundred MBs.I'm pretty amazed as i have a rather high spec workstation and the opening and closing time of the file just drives me crazy.I own a dell optiplex 990,with an i7 processor,8 GB RAM,and a 1GB Graphic card. Some landscape architects around here may know what i'm talking about.I understand that grouping and layering components will reduce the lag,i always work like this but still i get a hard time with huge files. Thanks guys.

What I thought I saw suggested once was to break the model into multiple models/components. Use simplified proxy shapes to represent those portions you are not working on at present. Have an assembled final file into which you load the components. Of course, the catch is that the final file may have the same lag. Or, perhaps mount png images as backdrop/billboards for visual reference in your current working file? I don't know the nuts and bolts on this, however.
Now, this would be what you would do after you have practiced all the other techniques of file size optimization, of which you are aware.
I have not done this, personally. None of my files come close to that size. You appear to have sufficient hardware. Just thought I could help. -
Ya I think the root of the problem is the hard drive. Thanks a lot for the help

Styles can slow a model down - without being too large. You're probably aware that Shadows slow things down - but Edge styles can slow things down at least as much as shadows. Profiles and other edge effects. Turn then all off for modelling and turn them on only for exporting final. Setting edge Colour By Material or Colour By Axis also slow things down.
One thing to remember is that SketchUp is a real-time render - in that it renders it's sketchy style all the time. Compared to other modelling packages that will quicker degrade the viewport.
What is the stats of your model? Number of faces, edges etc? When I work with large siteplans I quickly end up with large models and there's not a a whole lot I can do to avoid that - which is why I keep the effects off until I need them for export.

I tend to keep all the effects down while modelling.I switch them on,only when needed. Both the edges and faces exceeds the 1000000+.The annoying part is mostly the opening and closing part of large projects.Sometimes it just freezes and crashes.I doubt its the impact of the hard drive

With 1 000 000 faces you'll have a sluggish model regardless of hardware spec. When I get very large models like that I often export parts into components and work on the smaller parts, then reload into the main large file.
Also, if you have vegetation geometry with lots of polygons, either replace them with lighter geometry, or at least put them on a layer you can turn off while modelling.
