The "Computer Support Cold Call Scam" - had some fun!
-
for those that don't know, the scam is thus. you get a call from "the computer support dept" or sumsuch. they claim your computer is infected and sending out personal information.. they then talk you into installing a program to clean your system (malware/spyware) and take your CC information to pay for it... you can then guess the rest.
I got one of these fake support calls today. knowing it was a scam I decided to have some fun...
Hello?
hello this is the computer support department
what can I do for you?
your computer is sending out important information
it is!?
yes, your computer is sending out important information
can you tell me what?
it's just sending out important information!
oh my god no
yes, your computer is sending out important information
oh my god. have you got the pictures of me , the goat and the lubrication?
...he hung up.

I usually just ask them to come over and take a bath so we can discuss it.

I have used a variant of the 'murder scene' when getting yet another annoying cold-call...
**Hello sir, may I speak to Mr XXX?**Who's calling please?
Sanjay from YYY.com, I want to speak about...
[Interrupting] Well, Sanjay may I ask how you know Mr XXX?
[Aside, but so he can hear, 'Don't touch the body until the Forensic guys get here... Dust that axe for prints...']
I don't know him, I'm calling about...
[Interrupting] I am running a trace on this call right now... We already know that Mr XXX has received many calls from this number.
But...
[Interrupting] Listen Sanjay, I must insist that you remain on the line and do not leave your current location, [Aside, but so he can hear, 'You have the address? Good. We need to get DNA and finger-prints. Go, go, go!]... An officer will be with you shortly. I hope we can rely on your utmost cooperation. We have reason to believe you might be Mr XXX's secret gay lover and be implicated in some very serious matters that occurred last night. May I ask if you have a good alibi for the hours between 10pm yesterday and 5am this morning...
[Hang up...]
They never seem amused though. -
when I was younger I used to mess with the Nigerian scammers too... sending them a trojan named after a bank and telling them if they installed it I would give them my user name and password and it would allow them to access my bank. they always did it, however they were behind corporate firewalls... big business down there I suppose.

For years, we've gotten calls at the office for a Terry Chapel (sp?), from the same commodities companies. We've repeatedly told them we have never had a Terry Chapel working here, but they still call on occassion. On occassion we've gotten a wild hair and told them Terry was: in the hospital; had disappeared; etc. One day I was Terry, and told the caller (selling silver) that I was being investigated, my accounts had been frozen by the feds, and my phone lines wire-tapped.
