[REQ] Texture oak plank end
-
I need a nice finished oak plank end. I searched internet for a suitable one, but no success...
If someone can provide a texture like that, please do so. Thank you very much. It doesn't need to be seamless, as I need to put it on some plank ends, so the repetition will be at minimum. And I can edit it a little.Thank you.

Wood end grain textures are difficult to find but I'll do some hunting. I have some hand drawn ones but they are proprietary. When I can't use them, I have had decent results making a unique copy of the face grain material and then editing it so it runs diagonally across the face. I also edit its size unlocking the dimensions so I can make the dimension across the grain much shorter.

Would it be possible to go to either a lumberyard or hardware store and just take a picture?

Yes, that is also a solution however you may end up with an image that is not evenly lit and will cause apparent seams. Certainly there are PS techniques and even specialized programs to create evenly light and colour balanced materials from these photos but it is not too easy.

The best solution would be to photograph actual wood samples with very even lighting (check with a good light meter though. Your eyes won't be able to tell for sure. I wouldn't worry about trying to come up with seamless materials for end grain. No matter what you do, a seamless material won't look natural anyway.
