Autodesk 123D
-
Sounds like an interesting product! Looking forward to having a play.

Well I installed it this morning and it looks like an Inventor (light or free edition). Some what similar interface to what I have seen on Inventor and Inventor Fusion. It can save as STL, SAT, DWG and STP. It can also open the same as well as OBJ and SKP. It also has it own native format, 123D. I only made a real simple model this morning so far but I like what I see so far. Might be a nice tool to add to the toolbox.
-
I see on Youtube they copied some of TT extrude plugins
-
I also just tried it. Really clunky on my machine. I think it needs more horsepower than I have. I'm currently on a mid range pc. It did seem to have a lot of nice features though. As was stated previously in the post 'Inventor LT' is exactly what I would call it too.
-
It is also clunky on my PC . it's even unusable on my core2duo.
I'm wondering if it isn't the "invetor fusion" renamed...?!Anyway I'm happy ( and Glad) to see how Sketchup has changed the modeling software world.
-
Kind of a cartoonish feel to the interface. Could be a useful addition to the toolbox (for as long as it's free). It has some SU-like community plugin features.
-
that's not so good is it..
on this machine, I use Sketchup, Wings, trueSpace (4 and 7), posers 7 & Pro, Blender, Hexagon, Vue.. and they all run fast.
this on the other hand is sluggish and unresponsive. no way to adjust the graphics settings either. I'll pass for now..
-
What machines are sluggish? Mine handles it fine, 4 core 3Ghz, 4 GB RAM and 2 9800GTX graphics cards - actually the lot is a bit dated in computer terms, 3-4 years old.
-
Amd Althon 64 Dualcore 5600+ at 2.8ghz
4GB Ram
Windows 7 64
Geforce 9500gt with 1gb Ramand it runs like a lame snail... but this rig runs everything else fine...
-
I tried 123D out yesterday, absolutely horrible IMO. I know its a Beta, but the lack to change settings was annoying and things seem counter intuitive to me. With all the established plugins and goodies SU offers anyway, I doubt 123D will go far in terms of competition.
-
Perhaps the GPU is the limiting factor? Otherwise our systems are very close.
-
Maybe its not our pc's that we ought to consider in order to use a soft like 123D. You can always upgrade to fit your needs. What You can't do, is save to skp format.so how could we use it? In what format could we work so we could import models to an app working with skp, obj, etc... I installed the program too to check it out, and I saw great potential in the way you can model things, but I believe our plugin gurus can add these features to SU.
Just thoughts! -
Guys,
I had a further look at 123D, well reading about it mostly as there is no Mac version but they say its coming. I came across an interesting review here, http://youtu.be/YsPFlZ8ruwM
My main concern would be that the design work appears to be carried out in 2.5D! This for me would be a No No as I hate working in that mode.

Downloading to keep in my back pocket. Just read a blurb in Gizmodo or similar where they called this s "Sketchup Killer". After having played with it some more - I think that's just talk. While polycount may be better, overall tools and functionality don't keep up to the variety available in SU.

I downloaded it a month ago. Played with it a bit but so far I haven't found a use for it, yet..

I have been looking for a 'Sketchup Killer' ever since Google bought out @last, nothing yet has come close I'm afraid. I have however found many apps that contribute to my work-flow, but nothing that replaces it.

...beta 8
It's a program who has a very strong Fillet engine!

yes, it has some very nice features sketchup is missing... interesting development. I have to test it...
Very sad that the sketchup core modeling tools and functions are almost on the same level as in sketchup 4... no real improvements on this part within the last 5 years... -
