3D Warehouse
-
Hello all,
I just noticed a link through to the sketchup library from here and have read through the comments - I think there is a place for a repository aimed at more architectural (be it landscape, interior, commercial, domestic etc.) components that maintain a high quality.
My plan is currently to add some sort of download credit system where for every upload you make you get 25 or so downloads, and possibly add textures, styles, and maybe even scripts categories. I also want to add a "collections" feature to organize components into similar categories.
I'm really open to ideas so let me know what is wanted / needed and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to build it in. Also I am happy to make available bittorrent collections that can be downloaded in bulk, and also the entire collection as one. The functionality isn't too hard to add to the current site (http://sketchup.computingforarchitects.com) and we can arrange things into "approved" and other collections relatively easily using tagging.
Cheers,
Chris.

Chris,
Glad to see you make it to this forum. I hope there is an easy way to make your component/texture repository work smoothly with this forum. Thanks for your continued efforts.

Do something about what?
This thread was started when SCF started (look at the dates - back in 2007!) on a slow server with limited space and bandwidth so attachments were an issue.
I still like the idea of sharing stuff in the Warehouse (and in fact, we have smaller attachment size limit than there) but there is now no problem with hosting and bandwidth any more at least.

Well from what i understood, I would love it if we could have a repository of all the Skp models posted here on sketchucation, as in a single thread where we could see and download or upload models done by the community members. 3d warehouse is really huge... it can be really daunting to find good stuff there... Plus i really liked the idea of a more serious take on the speed modelling competition. This thread has some really good ideas... But maybe just wishful thinking... have just recently started reading up and brushing up my sketchup knowledge.
@Gaieus: My heartfelt apologies on misspelling your name.

True that repositories "arranged" by a forum software are not really practical, I agree. And surely it could be a good move towards the 3D WH - however we cannot "force" anyone to share their models there so I am not sure how feasible it would be.
Practically you can share any models, materials and styles there - "embedded" into the uploaded model.

I did not understand embedded into the uploaded model...

Well, here is a "model" which is not "really" a model but just faces with textures applied on. Obviously to share the textures, not the "faces" as a model (I typed "texture" to the search field and this was the first to come up).
http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=4a713a27a5a9c5735ecfe7c8b8fe057c&prevstart=0The same way, you can upload models (just a "dummy" cube if you wish) with a special style applied - it will be saved with the model and ready to be re-used.

OK, here is a collection about a 19th century tannery. All sorts of tools and accessories that belong to this topic will be uploaded here.

Probably this is the way to go about it... I'm at work at the moment. Would start uploading and give the link of my Speed modelling competition entries (atleast) and any other stuff i can...
Great Stuff by the way...!
