Point #2 - you mention joining groups into 1 then deleting doubles. What do you mean exactly? Double what?

It seams that collada exporter (or blender importer) duplicates vertices-faces. It also splits meshes in an unpredictable way
.
So two-three clicks operations in blender fix all these. Join the objects, remove doubles (vertices)

Using podium v2, no bumps etc, but I like this impressionistic mood
You may prefer to download the .3ds file with normal and displacement maps (for thea users lol) Displacement works fine with 2-3 subdivisions. Recommended.
