Didier Bur has several projection tools...
You can also use something like my ExtrudeEdgesByVector to make a group that penetrates the surface then Select it and the and the surface and use Intersect Selected to get the 'marks'

I was puling may hear all dayIf I know how I would automate this process. Its way to often in landscape architecture that you need some plan projected to curved surface - relief.
