Orienting textures
-
If I understand this correctly, once you apply a texture to a curved surface there is no way to orient it, you just have to accept whatever arbitrary way Sketchup decides to apply it. Is there no solution to this? If I want a texture applied in a direction other that what SU gives me, there's GOT to be a way to do that, otherwise how would everybody create those great models with textures all applied just the right direction on all of their curved surfaces? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

If you turn on 'Hidden Geometry' then you can use Alt + to sample the texture and apply it correctly across the curved faces. Also right click the texture and from the context menu choose Texture>Position to rotate etc...

(sorry, too late)
Basically, curved surfaces consist of planar facets whose edges have the "smooth" property. By displaying hidden geometry you can see those smoothed edges as dashed lines. Now you have all options for rotating/moving a texture image on a face.
Also there exists the "sample" tool (which is the paint bucket while pressing the alt key). With the sample tool you can copy a material (including its the texture orientation) and transfer it to neighbouring faces. Thus you can wrap a texture step by step on a curved surface (from facet to facet).
Another way is to use the planar projection feature.
I hope you don't mind if I just give you ths link that explains the topic in more detail:
