3D Basecamp 2010 Unconference Sessions
-
So there were no videos this year because of the unconference format, but each session(almost) has notes here. The list/text format is a bit dry, but there are some gold nuggets hidden in there, these ones were most useful to me:
Using the 3D Warehouse to Market Products
The Bottom Line: Making Money with SketchUp
Layout Construction Documents
Many of the other topics look good too, but since they are visual, they really need videos to be effective (SDS demo, iClone, Thea, etc)...Google are you listening? ...we want videos! I'm sure something can be done...provide computers with screen capture maybe? Its information that could be useful to a much larger audience...C'mon, you're Google, you can figure something out! OK, rant over Thanks for taking and posting the notes! If anyone sees an interesting session that I never posted, please list it.

Hi Marcus,
As these sessions ran in tandem the possibility of videos for them all us slim. I know Mike Lucey rambled between each session and made a highlight reel. Also George Knowles took video of any session he attended. I believe they are in contact about putting something together. But thanks for finding this.

Rich, I was thinking it would have been best for Google to organize it, I understand the difficulties but there must be a better way than just notes...something to discuss?
-
I am disappointed at Google by not taking any consistent steps to register the event. the 2008 videos had great impact on thousands of users; there is a lot of great material there. so why not register the 2010 conferences in video? did they think they were going to be inconsequential?
-
As there were numerous sessions at the same time, with 3 to 4 sessions sharing the same room simultaneously, it was difficult to choose. Some sessions were poorly attended others packed. Google had staff taking the notes you read above.
Recording these wouldn't be easy. But some should have as they were excellent.
Pete's, Whaat's, Mitchel's, Jean's to mention a few. But maybe Goigle didn't realise the numbers that would bite at presenting? I missed so many both conferenced and unconferenced that I was strolling from one to the next just to get a flavour of what was happening.

Did anyone attend the Speed Modeling for Google Earth session? One of the notes says this:
"How to obtain imagery for models when building maker doesnβt have the coverage?"
I guess that was a question asked by one of the attendees, but no answer is given in the notes. Can anyone elaborate on how this was (or might have been) answered?
Thanks! -
I was not there but what I guess it may have been done with the Street Virew imagery coverage.
Not as if there were any street view imagery in Hungary (for instance) at all...
-
I had thought of that, but was hoping for some other magical way to get images. The lack of streetview and oblique photography is a big problem for the smaller communities where I do most of my work. I guess you and I will just have to wait until Google repositions some satellites for us. Do they have an application process?
-
I do not really mind the lack Street View and Building Maker from modelling point of view as they will never produce as nice results as "manual" sketchupping...
I could certainly use some better aerial imagery however.
What do you mean by "application process"?
-
I think he means to apply for satellites to take new images!
I'd apply except we're hidden under all year round. Mainly to prevent people finding the pots o' gold at the end of the rainbows.
The lengths we goto to keep the emerald isle a magical place. -
Yes, Rich understood; it was a feeble attempt at making a joke.
-
The notes are mostly well done; several people put a lot of time into them. Thanks to all you Googlers who posted them for the rest of us.
Some are excellent, going into great depth, others not so much. It would be nice to have some of the holes filled in.
In this world of online collaboration, wouldn't it make sense to have the notes in a wiki format? That way anybody who attended could add their recollections of what occurred, and hopefully we'd get the most complete summary.
-
We missed you out there in Boulder Matt.
It would be nice if there was some way to add notes. I already have some notes and links I would like to add to the session Rick and I presented. Just a few things I would have put together the first time if I had the chance.

Why not start a thread here if you have something you want to add?
Copy the original notes into quotes then add your own recollection.
