Why can I only open 1 SketchUp file at a time
-
Hi Sketchucators, My name is Keene and I have been using SketchUp for a few months now. It is quite the group you guys and gals have here as I have been observing on an almost daily basis and have recognized a genuine passion and care for the program and users of it.
I use Pro 6.4.265 on a AMD Athlon 2 X2 250 processor, 3.00 GHz, 4.00 GB RAM PC with 64-bit Windows 7.
The problem I am coming across is that I cannot have 2 files open at the same time. If I am working on one file and try to start another 'New', it asks me if I want to save before proceeding. Clicking Yes or No closes my current drawing and opens up a blank (just Sang) file.
I know I have seen multiple files open by one SketchUp program before, so it can be done...
Thanks

Hi,
Welcome to SCF...
I see your using Win7. If you have SketchUp 'pinned' to your taskbar just right click it and choose Google SketchUp 7. It will then open another Sketchup window.
Or...
Start > All Programs > Google SketchUp 7 > then right click the SketchUp Icon as above
Hope this helps

Hi Keene (and welcome, too)
I am not sure how you are doing it but starting a new SU instance from the File > New menu will indeed terminate your current operation (file) and start a new one.
I do not know how it works in Win 7 but simply double clicking on the SU icon on my XP desktop launches a new SU instance (without bothering with the previous). I can even launch different versions (6... 7... etc...) this way.

Yep, win 7 is the same.
You can also use "Open" on the file menu, or right click on the program itself. You can certainly have several instances open at the same time.

That method will ask to save your current model before opening the next model

Oddly, not on mine, it opens a second window, perhaps it's buried in my settings somewhere.

It's perfectly possible on Windows.

Those are multiple instances of SU running. In the Mac, you can open multiple files in the same instance.
Practically speaking, I can see not too much difference (unless someone is working with a network license).

Thanks for pointing that out Gaieus, I missed that "Small" detail.

I see I am stuck in my ways as most of the software I use is similar to Mac in that I can open multiple files in the same instance. Maybe this post belongs in the Duh thread or even in Beginners Tips...
Thanks
