Sorry if this is covered elsewhere - but I have looked at many tutorials and posts but nothing is covering my specific request.

I want to construct a patio cover - VERY SIMPLE design using 2x6, 4x4, etc. I cannot seem to get started. Can you point me to a tutorial that covers this?

I assume I would create the 2x6 "lumber" using rectangle, pullout, etc.
Maybe use the ruler to get the 2x6" dimms and 14ft long. And copy one 4x6 to make the 31 pieces that make up the current top contruction.

I am used to Visio and PunchPro which may be clouding my thinking.

      Thank-You

I don't know of any tutorials specific to your need, but like you said, its just a matter of making the components you need and putting them together like you are building it in real life. Or you could search the 3D warehouse to see if there is something similar that you can modify for what you need.

          Hi Dave,

Those lumbers shouldn't be hard to model, right? You need to use the "Measurement box" at the bottom right - when starting a rectangle for instance with the rectangle tool start drawing it, release everything, type 2",6" (or 4",4") and hit Enter. (if you use a non-English keyboard, type 2";6" instead)

Now you grab the PushPull tool , start pulling it up, type 14' and hit Enter.

Now make it a component - triple click to select all > right click > "Make component" from the context menu (please, give it some meaningful name and maybe even enter the dimensions in the description field).

And now comes the tricky part - a "Linear array". Select the component, then pick the Move tool press the Ctrl key (a little + sign will appear indicating you are making a copy) > move the copy aside (in the direction you want to make the array), type the distance (say 1'2") and hit Enter.
Now comes the array part - type x30 (for 30 copies + the 1 original to end up with 31) and hit Enteragain.

          😉

            Gaieus,

Thanks for your feedback. I have been reading all I could for 2-days to do what you explained here. With your help I was able to create my roof structure in 5-minutes!

Thank-You for getting me going. This is a very remarkable program.

            Dave

You welcome, Dave. And indeed, it is an excellent program with which anyone (even non computer "professionals") can easily get going once they get the basic hang of it.

                Hi Dave, hi folks.

                Dont't forget that lumber don't have the stated dimensions. A 2x4 measures 1.5" by 3.5", a 2x6 is 1.5" x 5.5" and so forth.

                Just ideas.

I like the "rectangle the bottom" approach. Keyboard shortcut R gets the Rectangle tool. Start to Rectangle the bottom of the board. Type 14',1.5 (if inches are your default, you don't need an inch symbol). This assumes you want a fourteen-foot, 2-by-something.

Once the bottom is modeled, Bucket with your chosen material or color, then PushPull up (to 5.5 if you are modeling a 2x6). If you bucket first, all six faces of the board will be finished.
