How to make augmented reality whit your sketchup model(free)
-
hello,
i'm glad to present you my first tutorial :
how to make augmented reality whit sketchup (free) and free softwares
all you need is free software like blender ...
my english is very bad , so if you have better translation please contact me.
i hope you ll enjoy !!!**NOT FOR COMMERCIAL USE !!!!**
edit : made a mistake on page 4/8 about blender
correct sentence is "- tips : to select an object right click on it, to move select it left click on the winget hold and drag"pdf updated
edit 2 : sometimes the lights are not activate in the model, add how to activate them on page 7/8

There's also some software from ar-media that works as a plugin within SU. Not sure if there are any advantages with your method but this plugin certainly saves time. The demo version only lets you play with it in 30 second increments though. You have to pay for the full version.

Thanks for that tutorial Juan.
I don't really grasp the fuzz about the whole augmented reality hype though.
Can't find any use for it, besides finding it amusing for 5 seconds. -
Juan, Kwist has a good point. I played with the ar-media plugin and thought it was really cool. I showed it to 3 or 4 people at the office as well as my wife at home and they were all pretty blown away by it. Nevertheless, I'll be darned if I can figure out what I'd use it for. I work for an architectural company and do our renderings. Typically I'm not the one going out and showing the images to the companies but rather one of the project developers. I can see how even on the occassion where I might go out there for a presentation it would be a cool 'wow' factor. But you can't hold it like a scale model and you don't get the detail and information that a rendering or even a Sketchup image can provide. Any ideas on what to do with this ability?

baby steps for now..
i can imagine the future of this stuff though.. full on interactivity with your model for drawing and presentation..
drawing example - pick up a 2x4 and stick it over there. or clay style molding etc.
presentation - open a door and look inside.. lift a roof off etc.. virtually place yourself inside a model etc.i do think this and similar is the beginning of the end for mice & flat screens for 3d computer drawing.

I buy this plugin (ar-media), and, in a few weeks, i'll buy the exporter, but here the goal is to use only free softwares (no trial versions, no time limitation), i hope some teachers will catch attention of theyr students whit it.
And my method allows you to display 6 separate models (not in the first tutorial, but next) on 6 differente patterns in the same video session (for example you charge the 6 models, and choose the pattern the display model number 3 then number 4 etc).
In a few month you'll be able to display animations whit free softs (if me and my team have time to spend on it) and you will be able to interact whit it (movement, microphone ...) and surely physik laws ...
look at what this software is able to do : http://ge.ar-live.de/ -
A recent brainstorming discussion I had with some teachers about uses for augmented reality generated the following ideas, not all necessarily using SU:
-projecting a more detailed element or some sort of animation onto an architectural card model
-Projecting a digital costume design onto a real person
-Using AR to project a wireframe over a matching still life to explain perspective drawing
-If the target grid could be scaled up, to project shop display units, counters or exhibition stands into an empty interior space. -
Actually when you share your work to your costumer for example, you, in the worst case, you send an printed image, because everyone can see a picture. So you work hours to produce an simple image ?
In my last job, in Paris (France), i was working as engineer on Cad soft named Pro-engineer , when i show to my costumers the pdf3d, we buy (1000euros) the license in the hour (very big costumers). look at the attachement kiosque.pdf this garden shell i built whit my father long time agoto have an idea of 3d pdf.
When i learn (alone on my free time) to animate this 3d pdf, everyone was asking me for this kind of animation. look at the attachement umid_M2.pdfsanta gift (so i hope)This sucess was due to the fact, that almost everyone can read a pdf file.
But for each new contact i have to explain how to use a 3d pdf : rotate = mouse1+mouse movement, zoom = mouse2+mouse movement, pan = mouse1&2+mouse movement ...what i see in augmented reality, in a few months, i just send to my costumer a file, he double-click on it, hold the pattern, an enjoy the 3d, no need for more explaination.
on the pattern you can print some fake buttons, whitch the costume push then the animation start (an exploded view for example).are you not all frustrated to share your babies in jpeg format ?

I think each medium has its advantages. Still images can be limiting but you can take them much further in terms of photo reality if that is something that is desired. It also saves a lot of modeling time when you don't have to focus on the areas that won't be seen or on unimportant parts. If you need to see more there's 3d animation which requires a lot more detail in modeling and if you're rendering the animation it takes a lot of time. You can still fudge a bit on the details though as you get to choose the camera locations. With a 3d PDF or similar viewer, you must be very careful as clients can view any part they wish. Also many clients aren't too comfortable with 3d so even if you give them simple directions they could quickly become frustrated. For those clients even a series of 4 or more still images might be infinitely more helpful.
Along those lines, I think your 2nd pdf is really helpful. You have the ability to orbit on your own but otherwise there are simple buttons which make it easy to navigate and either way there's still some of that WOW factor as almost everyone's seen a PDF but almost no one knows that it has the capability to perform 3d actions.
In the end I guess it's just good to have options to fit any case and more options are always welcome, however I doubt that any of those options will soon replace some of the more traditional ones.

You're right, each medium has its advantages, but a medium of dimension n+1 can include the medium of dimension n. it is also true for post processing such as Photoshop and other rendering software, add some lights
remember that what you see on the 3D pdf is just an ... jpeg ... I allow your computer to calculate the rendering in different positions and / or animation (or I does not).
Each media has its time, one day when we will realize that the paper is so precious that it will end to the museum with the painting etc. ...
The trick is to adjust the precision (or the features) of your model to the user.
Do you think one day we will see cameras in 3d? in fact it already exists and is based on the technology of augmented reality, see the video
I sincerely think that technology evolves too quickly, but we are not, we must be aware, and that is the goal of the tutorial ...
