Well, just to "bump" the topic with the survey results. It seems that speed is the biggest concern in performance (use advanced HW and reduce rendering time - whatever it means)

I guess they mean a more responsive viewport - higher framerate etc...

          Hopefully. 😉

(or faster 2D rendering when exporting?)

            Good. The results are in.
Will this mean that Google will now start developing Sketchup according to users expectations?
Has development on v8 started yet?

Nah, theyve just been sitting around scratching their arses for the past 6 months.

Could very well be, as that's exactly what they did between 6 and 7. 😎

I think these results pretty much screams what everyone thinks about speed and hardware in sketchup...lest just hope the google guys take us serious these time.

it has always bug me why other modeling softwares could make use of better graphics cards to boost performance and graphics quality, or like, for example, mudbox can "just" subdivide a keep modeling a mesh up to 12milion polygons but the 64 bits version can use the more ram available to work on meshes with more than 30 milion polygons...strange that we don't need stuff like that for sketchup...

And don't be like that stinkie. They developed better google earth tools (because everyone that pays for sketchup use it for developing models for free for a paid aplication like google earth...)and that other program that comes with sketchup...hmm..what's his name again?...Oh, yeah! Layout (sorry about that but i've never use that Autocad-Photoshop-Corel-wannabe programa...i use the real ones instead). Thank god we have the biggest rival of sketchup pro to work with for the ones that don't want more trash instaled on the computer and just want a good and easy (but unfortunaly limited) modeling software: sketchup free 😄

I actually reverted from SU7 to 6 due to speed issues, I still believe version 6 is faster and smoother.

i was beeing ironic coen...but yes i completly agree with, that the priority is geometry handling.

I'm using version 7 free because the new feature with lines intersecting themselves can be very useful for modeling. other than that i still find it hard to find diferences between 6 and 7 since nothing's changed, but i don't have speed changes betwen versions, or if it has any, for better or worse, for me it's not noticable.

                      BTW nice cat Coen 😉

Is it? Good thing I haven't upgraded then.

I've been going back and forth between Silo/Modo and SU for the last couple of weeks. And I must say, even when working on extremely basic models, orbiting and panning are annoyingly slow in SU. I really hope the next update fixes that.

By now, I've reached a point where the main reason why I keep using SU is ... Vray. Kinda sad, eh? 😄

don't ditch skechup just yet stinkie.
I'm currently going back to the "beggining" in my workflow, these means using 3ds Max again. And right now i'm replacing max for Blender (it's really good once you understand some basic stuff and know how everything works). But i can tell you something about sketchup: it really doens't matter which of the "Big Guns" 3d modelers you use, because for archetectual/geometrical and accurate modeling sketchup still wins in speed and "easy to do" matters, simply because of the "dynamic" snaps and the abily to "draw" and "divide" lines always with measures. So for me for this kinda modeling importing from sketchup is still the best option.

Of course if you don't do much arch stuff and such then maybe it's time to move on... I'm also wainting for n-gons in blender and more accurate modeling tools to see if i can do the switch and keep everything inside one sofware and now keep jumping between them.

Same here...and the fact that Sketchup is the only modeler that lets you design a building with a real time visual feedback and instant presentation look.

I can't live with its slowlyness anymore though...
Until there is an alternative as a design+ vray tool, I need to stick to it.
3dsMax is great, but in an architecture firm where the designs constantly change, SU is the only valuable tool to do it.

Neither can I. Still, I'd obviously miss it if I ditched it. It's perfect for what I do - the only thing it really lacks, is little more power. I cannot believe Google didn't adress this issue with 7 - but I'm hoping they'll do so with 8.
