Multiple Windows in Sketchup?

I was wondering if it is possible to have multiple windows of the same model open in sketchup? or just having multiple windows of different models and one toolbar instead of a whole sketchup window for each model?

Its possible to have the same model open in more than one window, but one of the windows has to be read-only. Multiple windows for different models is not currently possible.

And even if you open he same file in another SU instance (window), it won't update what you are doing in the first instance.

about the "different models in different windows" thing: I have a dream, that you can open several models within SketchUp. they show up as tabs (not much unlike the scene tabs), but above the the tool bars and the menues (at the very top of the screen).
you can then easily switch between models easily, simply by clicking on each particular tab. you can even copy components, textures, styles or even scene-settings by dragging it onto the tab of a different model...
and you can right-click a component within a model to "open in a new tab". that comes in handy when your model shows a big site with complicated terrain and a lot of buildings. you simply open a component in a new tab. now you switch to that tab and edit the component. while you are working, the component instance in the original file is updated dynamically. so when you return to that model, the component is already up to date...

unfortunately just dreams... maybe SketchUp 8...

Thats what i'm talking about. all of the other 3D systems i've used have this ability. and it would be really convient if sketchup could do the same.

Ross,

The general concept of SU allows the program (and the users) not to need those multiple windows which other programs generally have in order to make modelling possible at all.

Instead of modelling something from above for example, you can always use the inference engine in SU to make sure that your lines are going in the proper direction.

The world needs more dreams! This would be great.

While we're at it, how about the ability to split the SU window into panes, vertically or horizontally? And the ability to split the panes into more panes, and ... (Actually, I'm describing the Konqueror browser, Linux, KDE. It's great.)

Hmmm sounds like Blender. I'm not sure if I would use a split screen feature or not in SU, I used to in 3ds max but I've got used to SU's one window now. It would be interesting to have this function though.

As one of the founder members, I didn't get much further either, but I did have a go at some online courses. It's useful for converting files though!

I think multiple or split screens are great no matter how good the scrolling is. I am on this thread cause I am looking for that feature. Trying to see if they have added since 6 or 8 to 14....

I use split screen in autocad. Obviously in 3d mode it allows you to have the different viewpoints all at once, but even in 2d drawings it allows you to copy/move objects from areas of the drawing that are any distance from your desired work target area. Scroll Copy Scroll Paste Scroll Copy Scroll Paste Scroll Copy... it get aggravating when you know there would seem to be a common addition that sooo many other programs allow.

Even the Excel xl spread sheet allows split screen for crying out loud, (since I am crying out loud..)

I am back at exploring Sketchup again, after coming and going several times...the best advice I have ever been given for this program is "When you use Sketchup, you totally have to forget about any other program you have ever used...."

For some reason Sketchup reminds me of the Monty Python bit where the candy maker is caught using "real, whole dead frogs" in the candy. And the constable or judge ask "Do you include the bones?" and the candy maker says "Well if it didn't have the bones then it wouldn't be crunchy."

There is always a "crunchy" answer to these types of questions. The candy maker was probably selling enough candy to suit himself. Evidently Sketchup is selling enough programs to suit themselves. The right answer is "We are working on that, we just don't know how to do it without a major rewrite, or we want to do it and it is definitely on the list." But instead you usually get an answer that you don't understand the benefits of "crunchy frog bones."
