I have a complex shape from which I want to cut out another complex section. after intersection the parts, when I erase the unwanted areas, the remaining part is not left with proper surfaces but rather holow and missing edges. What is the right way to do this?

An example model would be very handy so in the lack of it,let me have the first stab in the dark; your model may be rather small and some faces to be created during the intersection even smaller (with edges about or less than a millimetre or 1/16"). SU has problems with such tiny models (just like with very big ones).

In this case, a solution would be to scale the whole model up by 10 (or even 100 if needed), do the intersection and clean-up finally scale everything back.

If this is not the problem, please, attach a model.

I think this is a job for Group and Erase, my favorite SU tip. I think Group and Erase should be a basic SU function. Select what you want to erase, group it, then erase. For some reason this will leave the edges you need to maintain the remaining surfaces. After cutting by "intersect" command I double click on unwanted faces so the face and bounding edges are selected, Group, and press delete.

        Hope that is helpful.
