1918 Spanish Flu resurrected?
-
Today I'll take up the role of resident conspiracy theorist.
Excerpts from the Wikipedia article on the 1918 "Spanish" Flu:
@unknownuser said:
It was caused by an unusually virulent and deadly Influenza A virus strain of subtype H1N1
@unknownuser said:
Scientists have used tissue samples from frozen victims to reproduce the virus for study. Given the strain's extreme virulence there has been controversy regarding the wisdom of such research.
@unknownuser said:
An effort to recreate the 1918 flu strain (a subtype of avian strain H1N1) was a collaboration among the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory and Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York; the effort resulted in the announcement (on October 5, 2005) that the group had successfully determined the virus's genetic sequence, using historic tissue samples recovered by pathologist Johan Hultin from a female flu victim buried in the Alaskan permafrost and samples preserved from American soldiers.[47]
On January 18, 2007, Kobasa et al. reported that monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) infected with the recreated strain exhibited classic symptoms of the 1918 pandemic and died from a cytokine storm[48] – an overreaction of the immune system.From the World Health Organization's website:
@unknownuser said:
2 May 2009 -- The situation continues to evolve. As of 18:00 GMT+1, 16 countries have officially reported 658 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection.
From the Wikipedia article on the current Flu pandemic:
@unknownuser said:
The origin of this new strain is unknown, and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reports that this strain has not been isolated in pigs.
From Yahoo! News:
@unknownuser said:
In Paris, the World Organization for Animal Health said Thursday "there is no evidence of infection in pigs, nor of humans acquiring infection directly from pigs."

I may emigrate to some Middle-East country. No pigs; no flu.

no human, no flu , I think that
-
The 1918 flu was worse. Already there are articles out indicating that this flu isn't as bad as they thought. The 1918 flu killed hundreds of thousands, even without the modes of rapid transportation we have today. What this flu has in similarity with the 1918 flu is that it can kill young and healthy people, which is different from the regular flu which normally is dangerous to elderly, already ill people and very young children.
-
Miguel, I've been wondering about "patient zero" too...?
-
Based on the evidence today, I doubt this is the Spanish Flu resurected. The 1918 pandemic killed 20-40 million people worldwide (some estimates put it higher). Todays outbreak appears to be leveling off, and scientists are even thinking that the number of cases of this flu were actually much larger, which means the mortality rate percentage-wise is much lower (in the U.S. alone 36,000 people die each year from "regular" flu).
I also take exception to the notion that the U.S. is somehow involved in a conspiracy to cause another pandemic.

Egypt, that's Middle East! They've killed all their pigs.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/8024946.stmWait, aren't they a Muslim country?? What are they doing with pigs anyway???
Ah, there are a few Christians. -

I'm pretty certain the implication was that the virus may have accidentally escaped into the environment after been extracted from the victim's remains rather than any accusation of deliberate release. If it was a conspiracy with the intention of shifting billions of dollars'/euros' worth of vaccine, I imagine pharmaceutical companies would be very unlikely to target a relatively poor country like Mexico.
-
Yes, Jackson. I was implying that perhaps a test animal had escaped from the lab and scientists decided to remain silent about the leak. I have to stop watching so many movies.
As has been pointed out, this "virus formerly known as swine flu but now known as Influenza A(H1N1)" seems to be as deadly as any other regular flu, so my theory has been proved wrong. And I'm glad it was. Starting yesterday, I am greeting people with a handshake again. But I still carry an alcohol-based hand rub when going to meetings.
-
Don't you have something better to do with alcohol than waste it on germs?
-
They removed the alcohol-based hand rubs from our local hospital, because too many people were drinking it.

On 8th of April, a journalist, Jane Bürgermeister has filed criminal charges in Austria against Baxter and Avir Green Hills Biotechnology for producing and distributing contaminated bird flu vaccine material this winter, alleging that this was a deliberate act to cause a pandemic, and also to profit from that pandemic.
In her report she also mentions 'bioterrorism incident in Switzerland in April when a “faultily” packed container with vials of “swine flu”'.
She has been fired on July 1st.

This flu thread has been resurrected!
I can't tell if you are serious about posting that site as a valid source of information or as a joke. With all due respect, the writer accusing the WHO of being a party in a conspiracy, along with other pharmaceutical companies and authorities plotting for or allowing this to happen, is a little far fetched - fit for conspiracy theorists. While I have no love of "Big Pharma" and other health care institutions in the US especially thanks to their happiness to take everything you own in exchange for your ability to continue living, I sincerely doubt they would conspire to do this.

I thought it had died down. However I see that we (Irish), all 4 million of us are to receive jabs in a few months at a cost of €80 million! Worst forecast is that we could otherwise see 100,000 cases of this flu every week!
I am waiting to see the mobile bubble filter suits coming on stream soon, if they are not there already

Unfortunately, it hasn't died down. My wife currently has it, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop and come down with it myself. She works as a flight attendant, so you know she likely got it from someone on the aircraft crammed in with the other passengers who was sick as well traveling about the country. It's like a bad cold with a moderate fever, and the fever lasts a day or two. The cold-like symptoms have lasted 5 days so far and now she's been unfortunately blessed with mild/moderate ahem digestive issues as well. Not fun - not truly serious (hopefully) - but not fun. Hope nobody here gets it, or at least doesn't get it any worse than that.

1918 pandemic was only a precedential, pointing for pandemic that will occur during Tribulation period, when 25% of the entire global population will die.
Black Death (1348/1350) was predicted for ‘the church in purple’, (practicaly, Roman Empire – study, the spread map)
Is evidently from the Bible that God is in control inclusiv over epidemic or pandemic catastrophes. There are mani examples…, but you don’t like verses to be mentioned, do you?!

Sir, with all due respect, this is not your personal pulpit. There are many belief systems present on this discussion board that don't need to read your internet rendition of a sandwich-board pamphlet-flinging street corner proselytizer, including myself. I value and welcome your input in a discussion and respect your beliefs, but you don't discuss, you judge and condemn; this is turning into crazy evangelical spam.

“The global mortality rate from the 1918/1919 pandemic is not known, but it is estimated that 10% to 20% of those who were infected died. Oh my Lord! Here we go again.
I was watching some nonsense on Nostradamus last week. Looked at objectively, it amounts to someone saying (in words so vague that they could mean anything) “Bad things will happen.”…..and when (surprise, surprise) they do, we then get told “See! I told you so.”
One so-called ‘expert’ even went on about the 3 global catastrophes that will supposedly engulf mankind. He said the first two were the 1st and 2nd World wars, but that we didn’t know what the 3rd one would be until it happened.
That takes the absurd to new levels of absurdity…..retrospective prophesy. I wish they allowed that at the bookmakers, or on the Stock Market. -
Cornel, you are on mission, right. You have instruction from God to preach. So what ever the theme you will find your angle. The more people argue with you the better for you as you need to do God's work here. I mean when I have the guys like you preaching in town centre or knocking on my door I can avoid them , but with you there is no choice. I really was trying not get involved with this but it getting now to the point of being over the top. I welcome your pont of view but could you please drop autoqutation and have a bit of normal conversation.
