Getting your models to show up in Google Earth
-
Here is a question that I have gotten recently and I thought I would throw it up here.... why not right?
Question:
Not sure if you can answer this or not. I’ve created a model of my office, uploaded it to 3D warehouse, and it shows up in Google earth, but only under temp. places. How do I get it to show up when anyone else searches on Google earth like other 3D building in our city?Answer:
So this was a common problem we had while I was working for Google and
the easiest way for me to explain it is to start from the beginning,
sorry if I repeat info you already know.-
Import data from Google Earth (looks like you have already done this)
-
Make your model
-
Load it up to the 3d warehouse (which you did)
-
But the important step is to make sure, as you load your model to the
warehouse, you check the box that says "model is geo located" (or
whatever it exactly says, but you get the idea ha) -
Once you do that, there is nothing more to do other then wait. Google
has to review your model to make sure it is "worthy". Once they review
it and give it the OKAY, then it will be loaded into Google Earth for
the world to see. But if you have clients or whomever, that need to see
the model now, they can download it from the warehouse as a .KMZ file
(Google Earth file) or a collada file (another type of Google Earth
file). They will be able to load Google Earth and see your model.

The description of seeing the model in the "Temp" directory in GE does not synch with Step 3... ie I dont think the user actualy uploaded the model to the 3DWH but instead just used "Place Model". This is not the same as uploading the model to the 3DWH, which is done via the "Share Model" feature.
"Place Model" - exports a kmz into the systems temp directory and opens the kmz in Temp area of GE. This is only local to the machine.
File>Export>3D Model>KMZ - exports a user named kmz file to a user defined local directory.
"Share Model" - uploads the skp and kmz to the 3DWH for others to see. If the model is well build with good textures, it can be accepted into the 3D Layer of GE.
I hope this helps
Cheers,

OR if you have uploaded it to the WH and then download it from there, it will get to the Temporary Places as well (although you can also save it to "My Places") but all the same, the model is in fact not in the Layers > 3D Buildings (i.e. visible for everyone launching GE without downloading your kmz file).
