Quick Maxwell render. Didn't really do anything special, tweaked the concrete material a bit and ran it for an hour @ 2000x1500

can anyone explain "tone mapping" or "tone mapped", this phrase has come up multiple times in this thread - is this software specific?

Google always helps me find answers to that sort of question... but just off the top of my head here...
Tonemapping = to manipulate the light and dark tones of your image to achieve a 'look' you want.
