Open as Read Only
-
At my office I often find that I need to work on models which people have open. They do not work on it, but look at it as reference while their work on the CAD drawings. That means I have to go and ask them to close the file and then reopen it afterwards.
It's be very useful to have an option to open the file as Read Only so people who only wishes to look at the model can open then without locking the file for editing for other users. AutoCAD has implemented this nicely with the little extra downdown menu on the Open button in the file dialog.

I tohught SU already did that. Havent checked though, so might have been dropped from 6.

I've not found any way to open as Read Only. I'm only offered to open as Read Only if the file is already open by another user.

Thats what i was refering to. Im guessing you were refering to opening the file as read only first, so that someone else could then modify the model? feeling a bit slow today

Yup. That's what I want.

out of curiosity: what happens if you open a model with the SU Viewer and then try to open it with SketchUp? will it open in read-only mode nevertheless? (not that this is a viable solution for your problem; for none of your colleagues will have the viewer installed).
what would be really cool, was a viewer, that views the model in real-time (meaning, when you change the model with SU, you will instantly see the changes with the viewer). utterly useless but a lot of fun

A real time viewer wouldn't be utterly useless. Rather interesting idea. Saves you from having to reload the file if you use it for reference and someone is currently working on it.
Haven't tried what happens if a file is opened with the viewer. I find it highly unlikely that anyone will use it...
