Drafting Table Project
-
I was asked to design a split top drafting table and then make construction plans for it. I thought I'd share what I came up with.
The design requirements are:
Adjustable height--2 different heights are acceptable and the height won't be changed often.
Shelves and drawers underneath.Instead of some mechanism for raising and lowering the top, I decided to go with two sets of legs. They will be held to the aprons and stretchers with bed bolts. Bed bolts can be tightened as needed to accomodate seasonal changes in humidity. When the table is in the high position, the end stretchers and the longitudinal rail are placed so the rail can be used as a foot rest. If the short legs are used, placing the table at desk height, the end stretchers are swapped end for end so that the rail is back under the shelves and less of a magnet for ankles or shins.
I hunge the shelves and drawer case from the top so there'd be no problem changing the height.
Either set of legs will store inside.
Thanks for looking.

great illustrations - i'd buy it!

Thank you Mirjman and Modelhead. So you need a SketchUp model of a drafting table?
Fortunately or unfortunately, I won't be building this. My client will.
-
Nice. Is that a Borco cover I see on there?
-
Beautiful job Dave! I love the storage for the extra legs. I'd love to have one of these, but haven't got a place to put it.

Thank you. It is or else it's green laminate.
Cheffey, Thank you. I wish I had room, too.

Looks good. Simple, yet very effective. I'd love to see this rendered.

Thanks Stinkie. Maybe when I get a few minutes to play, I'll try it. I want to see it rendered in wood.
Here it is with the drawer pulls and plugs for the bed bolts.

Gawgeous!
-
I dunno about rendering it, that style suits a drafting table perfectly.
-
True, but I was thinking of a render without texture maps (some colors and reflection only), and a subtle SU line overlay. Nothing too photoreal.
-
Very nice.
Funny thing, though, my jaw about bounced off the floor when I saw it. That looks like the drafting tables we had in high school!
You brought back some fun memories.
-
ecofeco, glad to bring back a nice memory.
Stinkie, this may be too photo real but here is a quick render.
-
It's a good start, I'd say. Don't think you need the room, though. This seems to be one of those cases where less is more.
