SU 7 - a serious discussion
-
Hello all. I propose this thread as a place to have a real (constructive!) discussion about what it is like to work with SU7.
To start, I am sure I am not alone in wondering if there are issues with all the fantasmigorical rubies out there. For example, has anyone tested Pelias' Maxwell/SU exporter...? And, how about some of the "new" classics, like Fredo6's curvies and Whaats masterpieces? Since SU is a "mission critical" piece of software for me, I'd be very interested to know about other's experiences with working with it.
I'd also love to hear about experiences with the new Dynamic Components and other things ...

A quick test of Subdivide and Smooth showed now issues yet. I guess time will tell if there are any hiccups. 'Profile Builder' and 'SkIndigo' aren't showing any issues yet either from my brief amount of testing. (fingers crossed).
I expect that most plugins should work fine. I use observers and webdialogs extensively (which are probably the most bug-prone things in the API) and have not had any problems yet.

This won't be a deal breaker for most, however any Chief Architectect users will find v7 files will no longer open in C.A. X-1. Version 6 files will. A work around is to export as 3ds from v7 and import back into Chief with the 3ds file. (I realize this is not a Sketchup problem) Just a note to any Chief Architect X-1 users. I am hopeful for v7 and so far I like some of the new changes.

I modelled a sailing ship entirely in V7 (though saved it in V6). I used the sandbox and FFD etc, for the sails and parts of the hull. Not a single problem. All plugins appear to be operational and working normally.

I have a question:
is the creation of dynamic components only allowed to SU pro users ?thanks.
-
Hmm, well I don't see any REAL improvements, except for Layout and all that cack which I don't need anyway.
Is there anything that is actually better? It's still useless with lots of geometry I find, I'm a little dissapointed, I say a little because TBH this is what I expected!

Yes, only pro users can create them. But all users can interact with them.

Very nice ship Alan.

Its true, the ship is really nice. Will you be sharing it...?
I'm going to do the upgrade tomorrow (after my deadline this afternoon) and then I'll test it with Maxwell and post here (and on the Mxwl forum) with my results.
I am looking forward to the speed improvements and also I am fascinated by DC's.Question to Coen and the team: Do you think it makes sense to make a new sub-forum for DC's? It seems they are so funky and complex it might be a good idea.
And, what about a "DC Depot" ala Didier's Ruby Depot? Or will this just happen in the 3D warehouse...?I have to say I have (also) enjoyed the organic ("self organized") development of this community very much over the years. It will be interesting to watch this new chapter unfold....

Why not just "save as..." SU version 6?

I later saw Rick's post but well...

Kevin,
you can always save your SU 7 model in SU 6 format (just scroll down the pulldown on saving). This can always be a workaround with every 3rd party app until they update their importers.
