Control HDRI background in Vray render for Sketchup
-
Hi everybody. I'm reaching out to try to learn Vray render for Sketchup. The big weight for me that how to control the HDRI background when setup the information before render.
And the big sad that the result I get not better than the example. And the trouble is "skyline" of model and "skyline" of HDRI is not the one. The skyline of model used to higher than the skyline of the pics. My model seem to fly in the middle of the background.
Then I create this topic wish someone who understand about my problem will sharing me the experience of control the HDRI background in Skethup.
Cheer!

adding some questions...can anyone post a tutorial in fast render setup? thanks peace

These are some really good and well written tutorials for some standard set-ups. As far as speed goes it is dependent on so many variables:
Computer
Scene (how much geometry, textures, etc)
Render settings
Lights and how many lights are in the sceneMy first suggestion is render to every available computer (DRSpawner). It makes a world of difference even if the other computers are not fast machines. Anytime you can split a render up and get the help of other computers power it will make things quicker. We are rendering to 10 other machines using my MAC as the parent and it has drastically cut our render times (but again this really depends on the scene).
What is "fast" on one persons machine may be slow on another. It is really a matter of knowing your equipment and taking the time to learn the settings within Vray. The manual is fairly well written and to the point so I would start there too. It does not cover everything but gives you a good start.
About HDRI's
Not knowing how much you know or don't know I will start with this:
The HDR image used for lighting needs to have the "environment" tab checked so it is using the image only as a lighting source and not a background image (hence the difference). The second thing is I personally do not try to comp my render into a background in Vray. All of that for us is done in PS after the render. If you render using alpha maps this will makes comp'ing the render into the image that much easier. Just make sure the light source direction in Vray matches the light direction in the image you will be comp'ing into.Could you post an image of your settings? If we see something that might not be right we can point it out to you that much easier.
What version of Vray are you using? I would make sure you are using the most current as there are some significant improvements.
Hope some of this helps.

Many thanks to receive your reply about the technical of Vray. And here my example skp with HDRI for background.
Before I use to finish my product with background in PS, but when I see the products of my friend with HDRI (of course they don't use Sketchup), it look really realistic, and it make me effort to use HDRI background with Sketchup and Vray version. But I have a trouble as I said.
The tutorial I try to do with "VRayForSketchUp_01.00.74" version.
And here the HDRI after convert to JPG
And here the trouble of mine after render:

Frank,
I would say much of your issues are the quality of the models you are using. 2D clipart is fine if the quality is high enough. I typically use clips for vegetation and background people. Any people that are that close to your camera need to be 3D in my opinion. That aside you really have not added much to the scene. I use HDRI for lighting but not as a background (although I have seen it done with good results). I would say try to have more in the model than just a few figures. I would make the model the focal point and not the HDRI with a few models to support it. Hopefully this makes sense.

As Scott said, if you're going for photoreal then you need much more details. And materials are also very important. Plain SketchUp materials won't cut it. HDRI isn't a magic button that turns all renders fantastic.

I like HDRI's, I work with them as much as I can, but I always had to make some tricks, to get a decent result. My biggest problem was the fact that, I can't get the shadows of my models on the background( like Hypershoot does very well), so I had to make some geometry to put my models on top, to get what I want. So, keep in mind, always put something under your models, and put it on the higher ground, because you will never get the perfect match with the hdri. Here one of my example:

franck, if you have problem with hdri, ask stefan. i swear he has plenty of knowledge when it comes to handling hdri in vray.

hi everybody......i have recently tried to use hdri's for render my models in vray...however i face a similar problem in that i cannot control the size of the image.....for instance when i used an image of a city skyline as the background....it would blow out of proportion while rendering...and all i got was the sky and no city skyline....can someone help with this....how can i the back ground image to the right size and the right perpective angle??
i am very new to using hdri's .......so i dnt know much abuot them.....please help... -
Can you post a preview of the image you're using? HDRI background images can't be just any normal image. They need to be a 360 degree format, either spherical, cubical or in any of the other formats V-Ray supports.

Hi, I am having same problem of no shadows of the models when use HDR images as background. The one way i found on some website that to make the ground with some transparent effect but receiving shadows. so in result, object's shadows appear on and feels like shadows on the background image. I just found this idea but unable to do. The website showed the tutorial of Vray on 3dMax but the GUi of Shetchup Vray is different and im unable to do so.
Kindly share your comments and any way out to do same.
thx

Ok there is actually a work-around to do this, but I never try it.
