got my pipe packed, Stinkie, where do we meet????
Will need to know what you look like...or maybe I'll work it out from your username.....
lol. Nomen est omen - just follow the scent.

Will an inflatable hammer do? (you know...the one that makes a squeeking sound when you hit it).
That'll be fine. We don't want to end up studying the inside of an American cell. Or any other cell, for that matter.
But on a more serious note: Google will have to come up with something really, really nice to get me to upgrade, as I am not quite prepared to pay for 'cosmetic' enancements. Read: extra bells and whistles that don't add anything substantial.
Again: I cannot think of a single reason why they wouldn't add high poly support, though - as it is quite clear that SU is in desperate need of an overhaul in that regard. And yes, I am very much willing to pay extra for that feature.

wow, do you have one of those? I want one, I want one...

I'll be bringing along my more advanced inflatable tool.
More damage -
what a beauty!
does it emmit sounds as well?just imagine medieval wars would have been fought with such weapons. a whole battlefield squealing and squeaking from the sound the different hammers, axes, swords...
by the way; a gread idea for the next speed modeling chalenge: "medieval weapons"
(sorry for being utterly off topic) -
Jet another Idea came to me thinking of working with Sketchup, an advanced layered material tool, call it
"Make-UP";
This tool wold let one paint layers on meshes with brushes or pens or what ever tools (smilar to Photoshop).
right on to the Mesh, in 3D view, plus it could also consist of procedural maps etc. Or even mix material layers in real time on the mesh so you'd see the result right away. All these Material editors are and have been very complex, there's got to be a better way.
Something revolutionary, simplifying like SU has done with the 3D modeling this time with mapping.Anyone here got Ideas to this?

While it would really be a nice feature, just think of SU being already extremely slow with simple shadows on in big models.
Now imagine real time procedurals and other layered material rendering!
-
I think internally SketchUp had to run some sort of temporary "texture baking process" so that it didn't have to recalculate every texture when you change your camera position. (perfect spot to use a separate thread for a multi-core system).
I love the name "Make-Up"!
we had a discussion in a thread about that once. can't remember where it was though. we even had a basic mock-up image of a possible interface, where you can place your colour-picker on any spot of an image and then "spray" the texture directly onto the model - you are spraying an "opacity-layer" for the texture so to speak. -

Working with huge models, I turn the shadows off, unless I want to render a scene. Then, I split big models to smaller units, just keeping the individual units referenced.
Here's another thing SU should come up with, besides the 64 bit and high poly capabilities, a working X-reff manager.
Plus, just as with shadows, there has to be a button to turn these extra layered mat's off. There's already a button to turn Textures off isn't here?Working with huge models takes some expertise in handling the whole scene in every app so far right? But for the occasional user out there, it could be FUN to have some cool tools, for the advanced people it just adds some more functionality that I can take advantage of if available.
Just look at VUE6, how do they manage huge models with billions of polys and multi layered mat's? If only they had a push pull in the modeler with some more advanced features. I'm sure that they will have some modeling improvements in their already announced VUE7!
So it's time to catch up Sketchup!

But vue hasnt got inferencing...
I think thats the main thing that slows SU down, having to work out all the inferences in the model.

I'm not sure what inferencing refers to, but i think it has to do with finding end points and intersections?
If that is so, my suggestion to this is, give us a button to override this! (turn it off/or let us customize)Just like good old AutoCAD.And get that stuck camera bug fixed!!
Edit:
Here's another thought on Make UP, it could be a separate app that can read native SU and is for the coloring/texturing, mapping and Rendering only. Just like the file link manager in 3D max.

On Topic: I think Make-Up would be one of the great things for SU7, right up there with High-poly support. Imagine how easy it would be to texture an organic model!

I've got a Crowbar, Is that okay?Off-topic:

I really had a good laugh at that thought. -
I have some wishes for Sketchu 7 free version:
- Import gif animated image files "Moving pictures".
- Clipping/sliceing bug of very large models "over 6000' diameter" to be fixed.
- The ability to create 3-D games "Game developers toolbox".
- The ability to delete hidden geometry yet keeping the surface of the model.
- Wall tool "for building houses"
- The ability to compute volume of a model "Similer to finding the area of it"
- Import/export more 3-d files from different 3d designing applications.
-
here some simple wishes,
fix that camera bug, I hate getting stuck in walls
why does the tipple click on a object select faces and lines on hidden layers? what's the point of hiding a layer when you can select hidden geometry? this is outrageous! for over two years these morons didn't get that fixed.
how's about some direct x support?
And how's about getting a sub object intelligent modeling into sketchup. e.g. for the follow-me tool, the shape and the path could be both made editable.
And the annoying having to draw another line to divide a face that was sopposed to be divided by the line drawn already!
Oh and I think it would be great if the top view would allow to rotate on the blue axis by keeping the top view orthagonal to the red green plane in parallel camera mode.
last but not least how's about a floating scale that can be turned on and off, changes in style, when one exports a jpeg? just like in google earth,, and yes why not a compass to go with it?

you can evade that by changing your habits of moving around in the model. don't try to scroll through a wall - rather position yourself sideways and then orbit through it. works fine for me.

I think the tripple click selecting all connected geometry has to select hidden geometry as well. I find it really helpful at times. besides: you should NEVER put any raw geometry on a different layer than layer0 anyway. allways group geometry and assign layers to the groups. makes your model a lot more tidy.

that would indeed be fantastic. imagine a realtime graphic like crysis!

you know, what is so exciting about this suggestion of yours? it seems, that Whaat will release the "Profile Builder" plugin next year, which does exactly what you are asking for - and more!

yeah. that could come in handy at times. I hope they introduce something like the view cube in 3Ds Max and Maya. could really be useful.
and in addition to that I would like a function, where you can completely align to a surface (so not only align perpendicular to the plane, but rotate your camera to match the edges of the face...)

Right on, Plot Paris,
I always love your creative input and responses.
I was getting a bit frustrated with sketchup (only a tiny bit), when I wrote the last post, I was in a very tight dead line and had to work with a file from a larger architect firm, that I don't want to mention here. I do work with huge master plans and having some layers is kind of unavoidable.
I agree, in modeling exclusively on the default layer and separating only by colors. Still I'm insisting on google to fixing the nasty camera bug, I can work and handle around it, but don't really want to....
Anyway despite the little bugs, sketchup still is the greatest tool I've ever worked with, so thank you for giving us this great tool google.
