This thread is great for inspiation on DVD rentals. Thanks guys. I am always so ignorant when I am there, like (some) women that can't make up their mind between hundreds of pairs of shoes.
(sorry if this came out a little sexistic, I am a kind guy 😄 )

[EDIT]: I added the word 'some'. 😄 .Me no more male chauvinist pig now...

how has no one mentioned the greatest trilogy of all time?

NOT starwars (least of all because there are six of them now)
NOT lord of the rings (yawn)
NOT die hard (although easily a close second)
and NOT The Matrix (personally i still only pay any attention to the first one, the other two are superfluous, and clearly awful)

so, any guesses what trilogy i am thinking of?

No idea Pav, there are some good movies listed.

              My favorites are

"The Good, the bad & the ugly"
              "Snatch"
              "Pulp Fiction"
              "Blade Runner"
              "Tombstone"

Like Star Wars I can put these in and watch them over and over again and never get tired.
There are better movies out there but these are the ones I enjoy watching the most.

LOL@Kwis, 'to boldly go where no man has gone before'

My kids and I often discuss our best movies, but there are just so many and getting the order of merit right depends day to day on what one feels like watching. We decided to do it in categories like Sci-fi, Historical Epics, Psychological thrillers, etc. This way movies that deserve a mention like 'Gladiator', 'Space odyssey 2001' and 'Silence of the lambs' get honored.

katsuhiro otomo's "Steam boy". best. anime. ever.
im actualy not that into anime/manga (there is a difference btw); but, as some of you may know, im a complete steampunk fanatic. while i cant explain steampunk in a nutshell here, just look it up on wikipedia. its really cool.
i'll try to get the youtube preview to work here.
ok, aparantly i cant, but here is the link.
                                      http://youtube.com/watch?v=0eAk6oNBSMU
it doesnt look that impresive from the preview, but trust me. its totally awsome to see the full thing. oh, and dont pay attention to the desctiption on the left of the video, thats not waht the movie's really about.

Ok - lot's from my list already here - Alan's list knocked off quite a few. While I am not a violent person, I have a love for war movies. WW II especially
"Where Eagles Dare" - Clint Eastwwod / Dirty Harry
"The Bridge on the River Kwai" - William Holden / Alec Guinness
"Saving Private Ryan" - Tom Hanks / Tom Sizemore
and the episodal TV mini-series "Band of Brothers" - too many characters to list a foavorite. This one still captures me if it is on the TV - I usually stop and watch.
                                        My other war fav's are;
"Letters from Iwo Jima" - never saw the american counterpart, maybe never will!
"Platoon" - Willem Dafoe / Charly Sheen
" Full Metal Jacket" - Matthew Modine / R. Lee Ermey (the first 15 min. still blow me away)
And of course - my all-time favorite; "Apocalypse Now" - Martin Sheen / Robert Duval / Marlon Brando 👍 👍 👍

Little test. Which movie was filmed here?

This is Mapledurham on the outskirts of Reading, just west of London. It has an old church, backed by a manor house; and top left there is a watermill and mill pond. From the shadows, you can see there are some high stone walls...and it's nowhere near any salt marshes.
