Erasing/creating faces/surfaces

Is there a quick and easy way to erase a bounded face, to leave only the edges? For instance, if I create a rectangle, then want to have holes in it... I can push/pull an interior bounded area out and then erase the protruding edges to accomplish this, but it seems like there should be an easier way.
Also, how about creating a new face? I sometimes have troubles when connecting new lines around an empty space, in that they won't actually join up to create a solid face in the area. Upon close zooming, it appears that every line is actually connected and on the same plane... is there an easy way to correct minor errors, if in fact the issue is that the lines aren't quite bounded, or off plane?
These two things would help a lot... thanks for any inputs!

For the first question, just select the face and hit the delete key on your keyboard.
Second question, Theres no easy way to sort this out as far as i know, your best bet is to delete the offending lines and redraw them. Often using inference can help to keep your lines coplanar, not so useful for non RGB lines though.

Any time you enclose three points with a line(s) you will create a surface (one exception is if the surface dimension(s) are too small, SketchUp doesn't do well with very small objects). If the surface does not appear, and the object is large enough, it is because you points do not meet. I suggest opening Window/Model Info and under Units uncheck "Enable length snapping" and in the Precision box choose the highest precision you can. Unchecking "Enable length snapping" allows the inference engine to function better and you to draw more precise drawings.
If the surface you create by connection three points is on the same plane as other surrounding points it will also fill in that part of the surface. If it does not you can be sure those points are not on the same plane (previous exception excepted).

and if all that doesn't help, you may be in the "wireframe" face style mode. then you just have to change to one of the other modes (shaded for example) and you will see all the faces again.
this sounds far too simple. but it happens quite often...
