Failed Save + Unexpected File Format
-
%(#0000BF)[I have been working on a small project, as yet unfinished - and when I saved the job, I received a message 'No Error Found'
I then tried to 'save as' a different file name - same message appeared.
Numerous attempts to save ended with the same result,
When next I opened sketchup, I tried to re-load the file and now recieve a 'Unexpected File Format' message.
The file I want to load shows up in Windows Explorer (thumbnail mode) with a small thumbnail OK and a file size of 1216 kB.I even re-named the .skb file and tried to load that, with no luck what so ever.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how I can recover this
Previously created projects (different jobs) all open okay, as a test of Sketchup itself.]

Any chance you could share the file? I've heard about such (quite rare) examples and even cases when the SU Team could "save" the content from a corrupt file like this.
I know it's kind of late now but next time (hopefully there won't be any "next" time) when you get an error and cannot save a model but it is still there, open a new SU instance, copy your entire geometry and insrt it into the new SU file and try to save that.
-
Excellent idea - that would have been great, will have to remember that for any 'next' time.
Tried to PM you with the file - appears that even when zipped it is to large (The file is too big, maximum allowed size is 256 KB.)
Do think there is a slight chance of recovery ??
Can you PM an email address that I could send the file to ?
Regards

Hmmmm, thats weird, the max file size should be 4mb, give coen or gai a shout, they should be able to sort it out.
-
Try the PM now (I changed the attachment settings). It would be better if you attached it to your post though (if you are allowed to or something) because then the SU Team could investigate it, too.

I have almost the same problem Paul J. had except my file goes directly to the bug splat screen. It is a large 7.8Mb interior with quite a few custom millwork pieces for a bank. I had saved most of the millwork pieces, but the interior build out was quite a bit of work and my last saved version opens, but is too preliminary. The .skp and .skb are both corrupt. No apparent reason why. No other file problems with comparable models or other work done on the same machine at the same time. This is a first time for me (since 2002) where I have lost both the skippy and the backup.
I tried the load file into a new drawing trick but it didn't work either.
I will be sending up a flare to Craig in Colorado but would appreciate a second or third..++ opinion.
Paul - did your problem get resolved???
Thanks in advance.

Hi Jim,

Just to follow up on the "corruption" Tricia got back to me right away and she was able to save components from the file, which will help in the model re-construction. Unfortunately as a WIP I had not been dilligent enough in creating components of my bank millwork as each piece was completed. Just another life lesson I guess.
They are still looking at the file - haven't found out what may have happened as yet.
Anyway, I just wanted to express a public "thank you" to the technical support staff.

I Had a similar problem, but with my problem I was able to save, and when I went to load it I got the, "Unexpected File Format" message, and it wouldn't open, and I have a lot done on it. It's huge, both in data, (20.2MB) and how much work I've put into it. Any help please?

I got this trying to save a file while rendering and the render was updating.
I narrowed it down to this when it happened a couple of times.
Probably not your problem but I think it has something to do a memory conflict.
My case it saved after render updated.
Never happened before and can't make it happen again. -
Can anyone help me recover a corrupt sketchup file as I have done a lot of work on this model
Thanks
